Lightning Round: Your Thanksgiving Must-Have

Wisconsin says, “ Hold my beer”.
Also true. But a true Wisconsinite would never surrender their beer. They would simply chug it and toss the empty. We did have a wonderful pastry from Wisconsin while up there. Kringle from a bakery in Racine, maybe?

DW saves things our kids made over the years. She pulled this one out and put it on the fridge. I don't remember ever seeing it. It is a reminder that I, have much to be thankful for. My son got it right long ago. The hard one to read is “MY FRIENDS.” A most Happy Thanksgiving to all!Turkey.jpg

I'm late to the party, but my late godfather's broccoli casserole is a staple, DH would leave me if I didn't make it. This Thanksgiving I drove out and spent it alone with my mom in her memory care room. Her Hospice nurse was there bright and early on Thanksgiving morning, what a gift.

The food was sublime, the roasted butternut squash soup may now be a new requirement at our home. There was a baby green salad with citrus supremes and a lovely vinaigrette. The white meat was even moist, the cornbread stuffing excellent, and the pumpkin pie was divine and mom's favorite. She had two slices. The best part was just being present with her. The staff all worked like crazy and were all pleasant, very grateful they chose to work the holiday.

The worst ever, and likely why I don't go to DH's family gatherings anymore (to be fair, I just don't really like them- and likely I'm not their cup of tea) is the dang Ambrosia salad. I mean canned fruit is gross anyway, then you add marshmallows and whip cream and who knows what. It completely grosses me out. Also, I don't like mashed potatoes that are mashed up with a hand mixer. Or, marshmallows on yams/sweet potatoes. Blech.

Amen!

Two of my favorites - ambrosia and pumpkin bread. Both are improved with walnuts.

Son whinging for five days now that I didn't make stuffing this year. I see it was sorely missed and will not make that oversight again.

Time to pass down the family secrets, teach him to make it and become the Stuffing Master.

Iffen ya'll evuh had a Suthren card, turn it in now....
Lol, you crack me up. Hey I keep bacon grease in a mason jar on the counter and believe butter is close to heaven, but never have I ever been considered a Suthennnah (misspelled intentionally to drag out the sound I hear in my head when I think of Southerners).

My sister made the best stuffing this year with french bread from a bakery.

I need that recipe.

Her ambrosia salad is always good.

I finally tried pumpkin. I will never eat sweet potatoes/yams. Though my twin brother told me I am an idiot - sweet potatoes apparently are good. ;)

Sweet potato fries at Lures near Annapolis next time you are here. Hot, crisp, slightly salty, a tiny bit sweet. Try Terra sweet potato chips. Ease into it.

I cant stand ambrosia salad but always loved watergate salad growing up. That is one of those items that subtly disappeared from family meals along with the older generations who made it.

Also, waldorf salad is just as disdainful as the ambrosia.

After this Thanksgiving my new must-have is DS's spatchcocked, dry brined, homemade herb butter rubbed turkey. Moistest and best damned turkey I ever ate.
I have seen that all over social media. I’m so intrigued!! ESPECIALLY the ‘DS’ doing it. Music to my ears.

Whoa. That’s beyond impressive. Seriously neat!
