Marines doing that voodoo that we do so well (Post yours too)

I know I am showing my age with this one but ……. PHROGS FOREVER!
True story. The Colonel that I worked for at El Toro in the late 90's was a 46 pilot and had 2 tours in Vietnam in '68 and '72. I was helping him compile all of his flight records before he retired (which by the way were bleeding red from all of the combat flight hours) and we actually found the 46 he flew in country from his first tour. It was still part of an active duty squadron at New River. Freaking Marine Corps still flying a helicopter that was at least 30 years old.

HA! We were there same time frame (West Coast). I started out in Tustin and then El Toro. Deployed numerous times with different MEUs on an 18 month rotation seemed like every float some stuff was hitting the fan. Mogadishu, Somalia was one of the places I got to spend time just to paint a picture. Those PHROGS were awesome in my opinion. I believe the last one came off the line in early 70s. ALL of them had some kind of combat related repair done to them. Some of the most fun I ever had......

^^^^ I forgot to give credit to my wife for the photos. She thinks she’s a horse whisperer. Or follows wild horses in the Yukon. I don’t remember.

I usually reflect on Beirut leading up to and on 23 Oct but I read this article this morning. I lost two friends on 23 Oct 1983 while I was in the Western Pacific. I reenlisted for a ship out of Pearl Harbor and they stayed with Division. The Second Marine Division. One of them left a pregnant wife back at Camp Lejeune. This article is about a grandson of a Marine killed that day. His mother was only 4 years old when her daddy died. This is a story about what is still great about this country and the people who believe it's worth defending. Despite all our warts and scars and strife, this is still the best country on the planet. This young Marine is betting his life on it. Just like his grandfather did.

Another 4 years. This morning at Onslow Beach.
Last month, I visited DD at Camp Lejeune. It was my first extended visit to the North Carolina coast. I mainly got to check out North Topsail Beach. and Topsail Beach. (DS paid her a visit last week and got to see the beach at Emerald Isle.) So beautiful, and rather unlike the California coast of my youth: warmer, cleaner, calmer.

I didn't make it to Onslow Beach, but DD said it's also beautiful. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that beholder might be a Marine in training. In which case, YMMV. 😉
