mixtape

Dude you have issues...I wonder if a SA is really for you..You seem to be an attention seeker...Not keeping with qualities of a Military Officer..

Yes because every teenager that enters the glorious, shiny, bastion that is the AFA knows what it means to keep with the qualities of a Military Officer and no one at the AFA EVER does stupid things, ever.

It's not like the kid is asking if they should do drugs to be popular. And I think some of us have forgotten some of the pressures we felt at the same age. The whole stone throwing analogy comes to mind.

Lahey you are getting some great advice as well and I'll only add you know the POTENTIAL consequences of your decision whichever you chose. You have to chose which one you can live with. We can all tell you what we would chose but the point is at the end of the day it's you that has to make the choice.
Sorry I don't tap dance around issues like this..Call me conservative.. Lahey has a profile, based on other posts that could easily ID his package. He is setting himself up for a problem. I'm trying to keep his thinking and preparation straight. As adults, I hope that we can send clear messages to these young folks so that they are mentally, physically and morally prepared to serve. That is our job as adults. Teenagers do stupid things, we did too. However, voicing it on social media has an impact that will last forever. Look at the candidates fighting for appointments on this forum. Now think about all those out there, that we have no knowledge of. It is a competitive group..You need to be darn near perfect today for a SA appointment. It is a tremendous amount of stress for these kids, I don't know how they do it. Once you set you sights on a SA path to serving your country, you need to adjust everything you think and do in order to accomplish that goal. Sometimes silence is golden..

Would you play this mixtape for your grandmother?

Given that OP's parents emigrated from India, his DGM may not even understand it. I probably wouldn't be able to understand it either.

I think OP gets the idea that it's a stupid idea, but it is a target rich environment for some hilarious sarcastic riffing.

I am completely sorry. I did read your original post and interpreted in my own, and different, way than you meant it. I took it as you saying they aren't worthy of it and yes everything you said in the latest post I agree with.

No worries...It is tough for theses kids..I just want them to engage brain before mouth...

Hey, I get that hat first! 'Tis only of late that my fingers even occasionally do not engage before the brain.

I wonder, since these kids have grown up essentially on the computer, are they as security conscience as their parents?

Nope. As a generalization no they aren't. You have to add in the factor of being invincible and that will never happen to me type attitude we all had at that age. Don't get me wrong they're smarter about hiding it from their parents to a point but any parent paying attention will see through that.

Once again this is my generalization from what I've seen with all my kids and their friends and me being part of the tech industry. I have no study to point people at just some old dude who thinks he knows things when he doesn't so it's worth nothing.

I agree with bull. I have freshmen cadets in JROTC who googled my name and saw a prepubescent child attempting to hold in his excitement after getting 2nd place in a spelling bee (I won 300 dollars for it). During the time of the pic I was really chubby, but now I'm like 6% body fat and an avid runner. They decided to call me Chubbs and bother me every day about it lol so now it's pretty hard to keep their attention when I need to teach them drill

Uhh, no. Not even remotely the same. Respectfully, this is one of those times when future Falcons shouldn't jump into current servicemembers words. Your time and experience will come.

I wasn't trying to say I was on the same level or anything, just the same concept that anything you do in the past can come back and bite you in the butt when subordinates figure out about it. In my example, it was a more comical aspect, but for your example it was based more on the respect from subordinates.

Oops - didn't realize this was already a thread. I'll post this anyways without reading the thread.

Be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words. Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions. Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits. Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your character. Be careful of your character, for your character becomes your destiny. -- Chinese proverb, author unknown

That you have even asked about this suggests you already know the answer.

Hi guys,
Just wanted to say a few things - firstly, thanks to everyone who has posted I read everything and it is great advice. Secondly, I have obviously declined the offer to take part in the mixtape. What some of you guys said about having to be "perfect" was pretty much the hard truth. At the same time, I believe that no one is truly perfect and everyone has some imperfections - I was temporarily caught up in the notion of becoming popular, something I feel like everyone has or once had. I also think I was a little misinterpreted - I am perfectly fine with my current state of popularity, its just that I felt like my life could have become temporarily more popular and exciting around people who I have spent 4 years with. Now that I have snapped out of this notion, I see that this could cause massive harm to my dream to attend the Academies. One of the posters here said that I do not look like a good fit for the SAs or an officer, but everything else about me seems strong; aside from qualifying GPA, SAT, Athletic involvement etc., I am also raising 10,000 dollars to build homes for people in Uganda and Brazil. Obviously, I am not doing this for how it "looks" on paper - I am in fact paying out of pocket to go see the families that I would be helping at the end of our fundraiser. I do however see your point that other this sudden desire to do something to effect my popularity is not a good quality for an officer - I agree with you 100%. But once more, I feel like everyone has experienced this sometime in their life. That being said, im going to try to best to not do anything that may come back to "bite me" in the future. Thanks to everyone who posted -it would be pretty embarrassing if somewhere down my life my mixtape resurfaced.

I was temporarily caught up in the notion of becoming popular

There is absolutely nothing more overrated or "temporary" in High School than popularity.

The only thing worse cultivating it is trying to achieve it.

Some of the parents on here are overreacting in what looks like an attempt to show their own child in a more favorable light. Don't take that too much to heart. I would suggest listening to the AD and Retired folks on how it could negatively impact your career, both in the short and long term. I'll tell you this, a kid in my year made a mixtape before basic...he didn't make it through. It should also be noted there weren't any explicit lyrics. Background checks are a real thing and things like this will show up, you don't want to have to answer to some spooky clearance guy if you're a gangster or not.

I would recommend against it...strongly. But I do think its kinda humorous how some people think that "that dang rap music!" isn't in keeping with the character of a military officer. If you are ever in Vandy quad at night you'll hear all sorts of 'interesting' music choices.

Worthless drabble from a 19er

Huh???? Lahey asked because he wanted to know the consensus (although, he already knew what the answer would be). I don't see how anyone was overreacting or trying to show their own child in a more favorable light. Had the OP been my child, I would have given the same answer. Don't do it and if you do, there are always consequences to every decision, always; some good and some not so good. Think and seek guidance when in doubt and that is what Lahey did and it looks like he heeded good advice that even you agree with. :) Rap on!

I was referring to proudofmyboy's post. I'm assuming they are a parent and not using "boy" as slang. In my opinion, it gave off a very Holier Than Thou vibe. But my opinion isn't always fact, unfortunately.

Sorry if I came off cheekier than intended.

A guy in 2019 wrote a rap about our class a couple of weeks before I-day. The whole cadet wing heard about it in a matter of days. Long story short, I heard his basic wasn't very fun.

got_milk, I never heard about that one! Not at all surprised at the result though.

I was confronted with a 21st C. counseling challenge a few years back when a female junior officer, totally professional and doing well in her career, a former top USNA mid, called, completely demoralized, when she found out high school age pictures on Rate Your Rack (ugh) were being circulated on her new ship. A moment of youthful impulsiveness from ten years ago had caught up with her. Tough conversation. She was going to hold her head high and march through the shaming, keep her performance brilliant and learn how to change the subject like a political professional, unless it was appropriate to use her experience as a teachable moment.
I am truly glad the Internet was not available when I was at an age more vulnerable to bone-head decisions.
Do you have the Web address for that site? ;-)

I admit I googled it to make sure it still exists. It does. Plus several pages of similar rate-my-omg-body part. I just cannot fathom why.
