NASS 2010 Acceptance Thread

The packing list on the USNA website says to pack 4 pairs of athletic shorts.

Evidently they no longer issue those?

Tim

Tim it does say that but, Karlie told me it said that last year too and she brought too much stuff, not saying you should bring back ups but, it's up to your discretion. Just saying what i heard

Never mind, I just checked my ticket again! I leave LAX at 10:55 and arrive in Michigan at 6:13, where I'll have a two hour layover until I get to BWI at 9:45! Fun!

I'm just disappointed that I don't get any food on the airplane  I always look forward to airplane food/snacks

Where's your layover in, Drew?

My layover is Atlanta. It is about 2 hours.

I agree it said the same thing last year and they were issued several pairs and that's all they were allowed to wear to PT. So you want stuff for class, but it had listed khaki shorts separately. Definitely have a few just in case they don't issue them, but I'd guess they will.

Also i heard from a friend who went last year that your company leader or what ever the group commander is called may wash your cloths for you, but don't count on it.

and if anyone knows about haircut regulations please let me know
My son didn't mention anyone's squad leaders washing anything for anyone! Guess it could happen though.

What is your question about haircut regs? There aren't any for NASS as far as I know.

so are we suposed to bring khaki shorts it doesn't say anything on the list

Ahhh! I forgot to mention to you guys!! Marciemi, in a PM had told me that last year khaki pants were not on the list but NASSers were expected to have them and got harassed if they didn't. Not sure how it'd be this year, but I bought a pair of khaki shorts just in case!

I bought these from wal-mart http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=13442591&findingMethod=rr&

Because wal-mart is about twenty dollars cheaper than Forever 21 and other stores in the mall

If I recall right the list says 1-2 sets of civilian clothes for travel and workshops...perhaps a pair or two of khaki shorts and maybe a pair of pants in case its a little cool...

Okay, I know I may be getting some of these confused because my son also went to AF SS and WP's SLS. And I know some required both khaki pants and shorts so he certainly had them all. Plus he normally wears khaki shorts most of the time anyway and I think most guys have a pair of khaki pants for dress use so it wasn't a big deal.

However, this is the thread that kind of stressed everyone out last year with people reporting they needed (or at least were "supposed" to have) khaki's:

http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/...ead.php?t=6525

It also gives some suggestions of what people reported they needed upon return so not a bad read.

Do keep in mind that you'll have workshops pretty much every day and it will be hot so base how much you bring on that (for shorts). However, last year they were issued 5 different color t-shirts (all with the NASS logo) and each day they wore one to workshops. My son only wore his "civilian" polo for travel there and his t-shirt to sleep in. He even came home in one of the colored issued T's.

Tina, we get all our shorts, etc. at Walmart. Or garage sales. Or Goodwill! I certainly don't believe in paying $40 for a pair of shorts!

Those of you going to week 1, be sure to stop by on Friday and give any advice to the next two sessions! Do it early if you can because we leave mid-day that day (have to drop his brother off at percussion camp that evening then we'll stay by the airport since it's 2 hours away and an early flight)!

thank you guys for the help, i guess i need to make another shopping trip...
:frown:
(i don't like spending money)

I have three weeks to get into shape now. I heard that NASS is the most physically demanding of the summer seminars. When I started my application, I put in that I was about 5'6" and 126 pounds. Since February I have gained about 9 pounds, will I need to lose the weight before NASS or DoDMERB Exam? Do they weigh you at NASS or any summer seminars?

I am sure they won't care about your weight, so long as you can carry it!

If it slows you down or keeps you from otherwise keeping up in PT, well.....:redface:

My packing list!

-pillow
-blanket
-twin size bedspread
-camera + charger
-phone + charger
-three sets of clothes (khaki shorts, jean capris, a skirt, and three tank tops)
-pullover hoodie and a zip up hoodie
-five pairs of athletic shorts
-fourteen pairs of socks
-two small towels and a big towel
-fourteen pairs of underwear (not including the disposable underwear my mom got :yllol: but I have about six twelve pairs of those)
-two one piece swimsuits
-wallet w/ confirmation&acceptance letters, school ID card, and money
-two pairs of running shoes

For toiletries, I am not sure what airlines allow you to bring on the plane (liquids and stuff). So I am going to list stuff I'm planning to bring along. If anyone could give some advice on what to leave home, I would really appreciate that. Thanks!

-a can of spray sunblock
-20 oz jar of lotion
-face moisturizer
-6 oz bottle of face wash
-face wipes
-cotton pads, q-tips
-6 oz bottle of toner
-travel toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss
-shampoo, conditioner, body wash. I'll probably bring three travel sized bottles of each.

I'm thinking, I could bring face wipes only and leave the face wash and toner at home. However, I imagine I'd want to wash off the dirt and sweat each day with face wash.

Other stuff:
-big garbage bag for dirty clothes
-travel packets of laundry soap
-notebook+pen
-sunglasses
-duffel bag, for the stuff they'll be issuing us

Thank you SO MUCH! I have been really anxious about the letter, and searching everywhere! This helps me so much :)

Oh my gosh, all this talk about packing is getting me so excited! It's like only setting in for me now that I'm actually gonna go.

I'm a little worried about being out of shape, especially from running cross country in Florida to running up north where the oxygen is thinner and the land isn't flat! But I'm excited to run up there, it'll be really scenic probably?!

And I have zerooo arm strength (okay, well just not a lot!) and I just hope I don't feel like a typical girl. I've been working out a lot lately trying to get in shape for it, but I doubt I'll be able to complete a pull-up. Ugh!

And I need to buy a pair of khaki shorts then! I have jean capris, navy and white capris (not demin). So I probably need a khaki pair just in case. Thanks so much for the packing lists, guys. It helps me!

Session two is in two weeks!!!!!!!!

At the risk of sounding really stupid what is NASS and how does it relate to USNA?

From what i understand, NASS is a prelude to what Plebes experience during the summer of their first year. It is a taste into classes, physical activities and a mock induction day. I could be wrong (and probably am) but, i think that is the purpose. If a i am wrong, or missing anything, please help me out.
hope this helps:thumb:

I've heard it's really good, like steaks and stuff, but i've also heard they role out the good stuff just before lots of PT!!!:thumb:
When some of the students in my JROTC unit went up to Camp Lejeune for a mini boot-camp they said that right after chow they jumped right into PT and it did not go well.

@FutureNavyPilot
From my experience running in MD is much easier than running in FL (at least climate wise). Besides, it is common knowledge that us cross country runners are the best athletes.:thumb:

It stands for Naval Academy Summer Seminar. All service academies except for Merchant Marines (due to their trimester system) offer a summer seminar program to give rising seniors a taste of academy life! Introduce the academy through PT, academic workshops, etc... show us what we're getting into/show off the academies! :thumb:

I'm now a 2/C at USNA and I was a squad leader for summer seminar last year. As far as packing lists go, make sure you pack what you can carry, no more, with extra room because you will be issued about 5-6 shirts, shorts a sweat suit and other stuff. You will be wearing the issued shirts every day and the issued shorts for PT. Everything that you bring be prepared to carry up 4-5 flights of stairs, you may get lucky and get a room on 0 deck, but don't count on it.

As far as being physically ready for the PT, it is good to come in shape and do well on the physical fitness evals, however, the squad leaders are looking for motivation, teamwork and effort as much as for actual physical performance (the CFA can always be retaken). Expect to get lower run times than you are used to because you will be more tired than you usually are.

Most important things:
A good attitude and the desire to work hard with your squad mates. Also, remember that your squad leaders have already been through plebe year and their job is to look out for you and lead you through the week successfully. Concentrate on learning as much about USNA as you can and ask questions.

Have fun!

Well I looked up the elevation of Annapolis and the elevation is only 39ft. That's 50ft lower than my city. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing

On the pull ups, I've only been able to do like.. four. But since your fists are facing away from you, I like to think about it as climbing.. like rock climbing! That seems to help me. It really, really helps to have a good mental attitude! :thumb:

Also, you have the choice of doing the flexed arm hang!
