I reached out to my DS's NROTC yesterday to inquire about NSI
He said that class sizes are smaller this year and therefore will not be offered to mids that will be attending a SMC
He will be attending VMI, so he is bummed. That does open up the door for him to take a class there this summer prior to reporting in August as part of their summer transitional program ( STP)

Why did you reach out to the unit and not your DS? He needs be the one making all contact with the unit. There has only been one cycle of NSI actually held. SMC midshipmen did not participate in that cycle either. The plan for NSI last year was to have SMC mids participate, then COVID.

You are 100 percent right that it should be my son doing the reaching out. It was actually my son that sent the email, but it was because I encouraged it. We have some deadlines here locally with the junior college that we were approaching. He would like to take a math class here before he leaves in the fall, but did not want to commit to it if he had to attend NSI. Appreciate the feedback.

Info that I have received is that NSI will most likely not include SMCs moving forward.

Midshipmen have been successfully commissioning and been successful officers without NSI for 94 years. Until last year each unit had their own indoc training often including reporting to college a week early. He is not missing/losing anything. In any case he'll get out of the program whatever he puts into it.

Personally I always thought NSI was an unnecessary, usless, and ridiculous expense.

That’s good to know. I wanted to plan one last summer vacation before my kids don’t want to hang with their parents. Youngest will be NROTC in the fall and his brother is AFROTC waiting to find out if he’s chosen to go to FT this summer.

I do wish they were going to the same school though LOL

Glad to hear this prospective as DS may be entering as a Programmer (still waiting)... I was worried about him possibly not going to NSI. His school NROTC Unit will have a week of orientation before starts, as you mention.....
