NC nominations

How competitive is NC for nominations? DD received an email from her Congressman informing her she would be called soon for an interview and she would know if she received the nomination by the end of December. The waiting is so hard.

I don't know this.... but I would think it would be fairly competitive. NC, as you know, has a very large military population. The bases at Fayetteville and Jacksonville are pretty darn large and a lot of kids want to follow in Mom or Dad's footsteps. That doesn't even include the air bases. That being said, there are plenty of congressional districts where the competition would not be so heavy, but you can bet everyone is filing for Senatorial nominations so that would be very competitive. All you can do is apply and put forth the best application possible. Good luck!

From what we understand our district has not been represented at any of the SA's in a while. I guess I should have said that right off. We are in a small eastern rural district so we hope she will be fortunate enough to get a nomination. Thanks for the feedback.

I agree that parts of NC can be very competitive and others not so much. Any district around a base can be very competitive. So of course Camp Lejuene/Cherry Point are, Goldsboro, Bragg are all very competitive. The Raleigh/Durham area is very competitive also. Outside of that at this district level, it could be less competitive.

I would say it fluctuates year-to-year. I am from eastern NC also, and my district does not usually see a lot of applicants. However, this year, I know of five people from my county that are applying (which is a lot for my county). This is not including the other three counties in the district. It really just depends on the location and year. Good luck to your DD!

She just received an email this afternoon scheduling an interview for this Thursday with our Congressman so that makes her feel better. One Senator sent a letter a couple of weeks ago letting her know she wouldn't be getting an interview and that was a disappointment.

Must have been Tillis. A few of my friends got the letter too. Not sure if Burr has interviews or not. That's why there is one more than one option! Hope it goes well.

Yep it was Tillis that sent the letter. But BGO said most noms come from Congressman so for her not to sweat it.

My son received a nomination when he was a senior in 2014-2015. We are in central NC about halfway between Raleigh and Fayetteville. I'm not sure how competitive our area is, but we are about a half hour from Ft Bragg.

Burr does interviews, but traditionally he never interviews until the 1st week of Jan. Impo, I would never say that NC is competitive. Yes, some areas within the stat are more competitive, but on a whole it is not. NC MOCs do not talk to spread the wealth, you can get 1, 2 or all 3. Competitive states like to spread the wealth, meaning you can get only 1 to only 1 SA.

My DS eons ago, got all 3 for USAFA, and we lived in Goldsboro.

I know in our area there hasn't been any local students who have applied for SA's in about two years. DD is hoping to change those stats.

What is going on with Burr? I have heard from my congressman and senator Tillis but nothing yet from Burr. I have heard rumors he might not even have spots for the Naval Academy this year. Anyone got any info?

Burr traditionally will not send out any notification until late Dec. for the interview. I think DS got his right around Xmas for an interview that was the 1st Sat of Jan. He does only 1 interview day. DS received his nomination letter 3 days later. In the yrs I have been here he hasn't changed his system. I believe that nothing has changed regarding the number of applicants, about 350+. His staff than whittles it down to the ones they want to interview. The yr. DS applied he had about 15-18 to interview for each SA slate.

Burr is a big believer in the SAs/military. I would highly doubt that he doesn't have a slate for every SA, instead it is like I stated earlier his staff is in the midst of whittling down the pool to their top candidates. Remember, many will place 3 different SAs on their wish list. That means they now have to x-reference the lists. IE you place USNA, USAFA and USMMA, but for them they may feel that you are not the top 15 for USNA, but top for USAFA. Now if you use statistics, you can see how this takes time.
~ Caveat I don't know for sure that it is 15, just throwing out numbers.

Additionally, Burr uses a committee to interview the candidates.

It is unusual for any MoC to use all 5 up and have no slate available to them. Main reason why impo is that there should be 1 slate available because the class of 17 is commissioning, thus that opens up a spot for him even if he did have all 5 there for this academic yr. The 2017 grad would give him 1 slot.
~ Don't go by rumor...contact the staff at his NC office, ask them directly if he has a slate for USNA. They will be able to immediately say yes or no. They would know that because as I said earlier, Burr does interviews.

Finally, it is important to remember that he has until Jan. 31st to submit his slates.

I got the rejection from Tillis as well. It was discouraging, but my BGO said that most get their nominations from the Congressman and to sit tight.

Received my nomination from Congressman Pittenger today and received a letter in the mail about a week and a half ago from Senator Tillis informing me I had qualified to interview with his board. What district are you? I applied to Burr as well but nobody I know has heard anything from him.

We are District 1. DD has her interview this morning with Congressman.

For what it's worth, DD, class of 2020, got Tillis and Ellmers noms last year around the same time, early December. Received LOA late December, then had to sweat out DoDMERB remedial on asthma test before clearing that and getting appt in January. She also got turned down for Burr interview in late December. So sounds like the Senators are running on a similar schedule this year.
