New Student Indoctrination (Summer 2019)

What do our kids travel in after the graduation? Uniforms issued? They only had the kids who fly in pack an extra set of clothes for today. I haven’t seen anything posted about this or instructions on what to wear.

Word is the only uniforms issued are those they need while here and the rest will be rec’d once checked into their unit this fall.

I assume they wear home what they wore to NSI or that extra they were instructed to travel with/ bring if flying today. I would expect they are doing their laundry while at NSI. We dropped our daughter off this morning. She quite literally has the clothes on her back. That said, our daughter packed a bag for us to bring when we come pick her up so she has comfy clothes for the 10 hour drive home after graduation.
Update.

I am here

Summer whites for graduation. They will get almost all uniforms before they leave.
Any other information you can offer from
The Q&A would be appreciated. The livestream showed it was still going on after the kids marched out but it was black. We didn’t get to hear any questions.

Quick recap of ceremony and Q&A from memory.

The live stream is being converted for replay and will be in the NROTC FB page soon for folks that missed or would like to rewatch.

Phones were taken. They get them back the night before graduation.

They got some pretty goofy looking shoes and socks at check in /processing which took all day (said with love and a little comic relief ... hard day to witness) Marine Option got the standard green PT set. The Navy kids got some more goofy looking PT gear. They also all were wearing backpack hydration bags. They all looked pretty miserable and maybe a little pissed off (more comic relief ... sort of). There was one happy clam though who waved to his parents. LOL. I suspect he may have a little “follow up”’on that. There was no contact with family. They marched out (as best they knew how ) and that was the last we saw them.

The Q&A after the ceremony which was great for parents and family. I don’t think that was filmed. It was pleasantly casual with lots of ya know .... parent like questions. I had one of them. I mean .... my kid is a super pale ginger, she must wear sunscreen

They will wear their new spiffy summer whites to graduation and it sounds like get most all of their uniforms and sea bags as well at the end. They can certainly wear their own comfies to travel after leaving. They would really like the kids flying to wear their new whites, however.

Tomorrow is continuation of processing and then July 4 is the 1st day of real PT. . There is a killer fireworks show there that night open to public. I sort of doubt these guys will partake.

In the issued ditty bags they got toiletries and sunscreen . They will be doing plenty of their own laundry.

Rise and shine is 5:30am and lights out is 9pm sharp. PT isn’t every day. It’s split up somehow by Alpha, Bravo and Charlie companies. That said ..... we all know there will be plenty of that. There will be the expected PT protocol to include swimming.

Sounds like there’s still a learning curve with this new program. I suspect the flow could be slightly edited for 2nd block.

There were a surprising number of parents there. I suspect many more will be there for graduation.

Word is there are only a handful of Nursing Option scholarship winners this year. DD hopes she meets some of them there..... among the 500 attending block 1. They have a CROWD! It sounds like there are 900 overall so 2nd block may be a bit smaller.

Oh sounds like no mail will be rec’d. It is discouraged.

Yes. Guys all had fresh bald heads.

Gosh. That is all I can seem to wrangle from quick memory.

Do you know if they will supply moleskin in the ditty bags? From what last year's midshipmen were saying, it is a necessity since they will be breaking in new boots.

They didn’t mention it. Gosh. I hope so. My daughter put some in her bag she brought with medicine and hair ties and bobby pins in her hygiene. Likely confiscated or locked away?

Thank you so much for the information. It’s great to have this communication line for those of us who could not attend.

Thank you so much for posting this! I was not able
To attend as I am in the middle of a navy move to Bahrain. I am so proud of my daughter and all the NROTC students there at NSI.

Are they really not giving their phones back till
Graduation?
This is extremely common. I know phones were taken when my NROTC MO midshipman did OCS for a period of two or three weeks. After that they were given their phones on Saturdays while they had 24 hours off. I'm sure they are taken at boot camp as well and on some NROTC summer training.

Did they comment on glasses/contacts? I noticed my DS in glasses even though he had a month’s worth of contacts with him.
Are they organized by school in any way or totally random? Would be nice to get to know future classmates at your school. Mine is going to Yale—think there are a total of 11 of them there.

So much for telling the kids to report with hair within appropriate Navy grooming standards. Those kids heads are shaved and I'm pretty sure they didnt all report like that.
Yep. The guys allll were shaved to skin.

This has provided quite a lot of giggles and good natured ribbing/ fun discussion in my house as my DS, scheduled for NSI session II, had convinced himself this wasn't going to happen. So last night I showed him a screenshot of the Kojak domes XTB and he was like "hey the session I folks will have their hair back in time for arriving at college - So I'm going to college bald??!" He didn't say it but his face said " My hair.... my precious, precious hair...." o_O

They didn’t comment of school units being organized by school. I expect at some point they will unify the units. That would have been a terrific question. Maybe it can be asked on the FB page. NROTC is responding directly there frequently to questions.

Contacts are fine for most things BUT they do caveat that with glasses better for a few of the evolutions. My guess is gas chamber, for instance. Maybe some of the swimming too. They didn’t go into detail on when glasses specifically were needed but did say contacts were ok for most. In think they all had a little “holy #@**” hello though at check in. Processing continues today.

They sounded strict about lights out and no hazing. There have been some troubles at that base in the last year. My hunch is they are going to be smart about this training window. It is under a watchful eye. That said they WILL be tired. They are putting in long days though not all is physical. They shared they are committed to transparency while training and delivering top tier officer candidates with a baseline to prepare them for NROTC and beyond. The Commander is charge did run the 66 person pilot last summer. Yeah .... he said they will hit their pillows hard at 9 and that 5:30 will come FAST.

We know a gal going to Yale who is there. She is from Maryland.

I don't know anything about NSI, but both of my kids have gone through a 4th class system and I have some insight that about lights out time and actual sleep time. If NSI works anything like the 4th class systems my kids went through (and I suspect there are similar elements), there is a "lights out" time, but there are often many tasks assigned that have to be done by morning (shine shoes, clean room, shine brass, etc.) so there is often work that they will have to find a way to do after "lights out". This is all part of training and learning how to prioritize. Also, with regard to contacts, it's not unusual that glasses are required for the PT and other activities until the training is over.

Yes. The bald freshman year kick off is .... Zoiks.

Hopefully he can watch the FB page where he will get an eagle’s eye into what block 1 is experiencing to give him time to game up. I am quite certain our DD was like holy crapballs all day yesterday and they didn’t shave her bald. Had they tried she may have been like “see ya”

Wow thanks for the great recap! I watched the live stream and downloaded it so I could go in slow motion. It was very hard to pick my son out in the sea of bald heads, lol. He knew it was a possibility but wasn't sure if it would happen or not. We've done 2 weeks at rotc leadership academy with no contact so just one more week. I'm just pretending he is there again, but I do already miss him.

Could you post if you are able to see DS in the video on slow motion? I tried screen shots and enlarging, but still could not tell my DS. It’s shocking, I feel like I know him so well! If I could see the legs, I could spot mine right away - thin and muscular. Thanks to everyone for posting info. Super helpful to this mom!

I was able to spot my DS when I rewatched the video and kept pausing it to get a good look. It was hard though and I was like what I should know my son but they all look alike!
