NROTC-MO Change of Major

I’ve read a bit about other people wondering if they could change majors while in, so I understand it’s possible.

For Marine Option, would it cause difficulty in using an awarded scholarship if I were to switch from my intended major (computer/electrical engineering), to something that wasn’t engineering? I understand the USMC doesn’t particularly care about major, which is why there is no tier system. I’d also have to ask for a change of major from the schools I’ve been accepted/applying to. I don’t want to bring this up to the OSO because he still needs to brief the February Board and I’d rather have as few issues as possible… if I can secure a scholarship, I’ll try the above.

Main Q: Should I bring it up to OSO? Is it a bad idea to try and switch majors from engineering to something else? Any additional problems that it would cause (losing scholarship/acceptance to college), or would it be relatively safe?

Major in something you enjoy studying. College is hard enough without having to slog through a major you’re not interested in.

No, the Marine Corps doesn’t care much about your major. They mainly want to know that you really want to be a Marine and that you’re supremely fit.

Keep your leadership informed. The more they know, the more they can support you and inform you. It’s usually not good to surprise leadership.

I don’t think there would be any problem as long as it a four year program. My DS did so and a million years ago I did.

The fact you are not yet in school means your OSO or a call to a unit would be in order

Your not the first or the last to face this.

IIRC, NROTC-Navy scholarship cares about the major (they have different "Tiers" for them) with awarding it, and one might not be able to stay on scholarship if they try switching from Tier I to Tier III. The Marine option midshipmen have a lot more flexibility in major, and I think you can choose just about anything as long as it's a B.A. or B.S. in the end, and you fulfill all the other NROTC-MO requirements at your unit.

I’m going to wait on emailing the OSO. I have some more application materials that I hope can be submitted for the next board coming soon. Will send to him next week.

I’ll start reaching out to schools to verify change of major is something that’s not going to negatively affect me.

@USMCGrunt , a call to a unit, is there something more I needed to take care of? Do the ROTC units have something to do with majors?

Thanks for the guidance, once again.

In both my son's and my own case, we already begun school and transferred to different majors. Had to provide written proof that the university will a change, the colleges have to agree, and that the replacement major is a 4-year degree.

DS is competing for a PLC slot right now and is changing his major which will require an extra semester - OSO is cool with it, saying it might require some paperwork but as long as he graduates by the end of that extra semester he'll be fine.
