Orientation 2013

How does that work? I'm a minor in all US States  (and most other countries, I think)

Wow! Just found out that my vision qualifies for the afa but not usmma, uscga, or usma. What would my chances be applying now??

I think applications for the class of 2013 are closed, so you'll probably have to wait until next year to apply.

He (or she?) is right. The app is closed. Plus, the date for a lot of senator/representative nomination applications has long since passed. But congrats on being qualified, so see you next year! :)

wow! really!!?!? that really sux! lol....i feel for you man! lol. except there really is no difference! haha. not being a minor really is no big

Really, I'd say the benifits of being an adult are quite minimal...

As an 18 year old the State of Ohio, I can now (in order of importance)...
-Buy more than one R-rated movie ticket
-Buy lottery tickets
-Buy adult entertainment
-Buy cigarettes

But... If I should get arrested, I would go to real jail, and bad things happen there. :)wink:)

Montana stuff is all 18 for the above mentioned.

HOWEVER I got my driver's license at on my 15th Birthday :shake::cool:

I'm still holding out to turn 18 so I can buy spray paint... finally.

-buy a gun! oh yeah!

dang! are you sure??? cause my parents said they checked and nothing had to done about it....

that's what I was told when I made hotel reservations... maybe only certain hotel chains? that doesn't seem likely, though...

I know this has probably been answered so I will apologize up front. Is orientation mandatory and if not will not attending have any affect on the cadet?

Orientation is NOT mandatory.

Will NOT attending, affect the cadet? That is a totally subjective question; albeit a very GOOD question. There are a lot of applicants/appointees that never got the chance to go to the academy. They didn't get selected for summer seminar. They didn't a chance to visit. Everything they know about the academy is from these forums and 2nd hand knowledge of other people. This is the majority of candidates. Orientation does a lot of things for the appointee and their family. It gives you one last chance to see the academy first hand; put things into perspective; and solidify your desire to attend. If you've never been there, it gives that Florida kid a chance to see what 7,000 feet in the air, snow, and cold feels like. It gives the students and family a chance to see why an air force academy education is ranked equally to an Ivy League school.

Basically, there's a lot of advantages to orientation. There's some people that have been to the academy numerous times. The appointee also know full well what they are getting into. They probably won't as much if they don't go. I'll use my son as an example. He and I have been to the academy; prior to his attending the school; more times than I have fingers and toes. He was raised in a military family. (Air Force). His ALO, as well as many other Air Force Officers are friends/acquaintances of the family. He knew pretty much everything that orientation was going to show him. But, we are also only 2 hours away by car, so it made sense to go anyway. But he could have easily skipped it and not been affected.

This is totally 100% up to you. Of the 1400 appointees that start BCT; 25% of them will drop out before their 2nd year is completed. I know some of these individuals. I also know some that WENT to summer seminar and declined the appointment when it came in. The biggest reason people give for leaving the academy is; "It's not what I thought it was going to be". Orientation is usually 3 months prior to any other college. (That's because basic training starts in June). Orientation gives you one last time before school starts to make sure you really want it. And if you choose not to go to the academy after going to orientation, you still have plenty of time to accept one of your other options and attend their orientation. I ALWAYS recommend going to orientation unless you are 110% positive you know exactly what you're getting into and you already know what to expect. And then, only if finances is a major factor. Of course, there are some that have that track meet or other event that same week. You have to decide for yourself. Best of luck. Mike....

My son is a soccer player and he did an official visit with the team last October. He stayed in the dorms with a player and toured the campus. He did not attend class because it was the weekend of the Army/ Air Force game and everyone had the day off. He got a good look at the campus so he is somewhat oriented.

Thanks for your help, Brad

I would suggest that the candidate and at least one parent attend orientation if at all possible. There will be more questions answered than you ever thought of before. I wasn't able to go, but my wife went with our son, and she learned a huge amount of information.
The experience of the Academy is so much different than a regular university that is is important to learn as much as you can beforehand. It will truly help the parent later on as your son/daughter enters BCT, and then the first year academics. Without having some idea of what is going on, it can be a terrible time for the parents.
