Plebes Dropping Already

Forgive me for steering back to the original purpose of this thread, but here goes... @Kierkegaard - are you able to share how many Plebes are currently in Tango Company? I'm wondering how it compares to previous years now that we're one week into the real part of Plebe Summer.

DD the Detailer did say many plebes seem out of shape. She believes they showed up in shape, but two weeks of ROM — mainly indoors and sedentary — took its toll. She believes there are more injuries and illnesses than what she remembers of her PS. Wonder how prevalent this is across companies (one detailer’s perspective, after all).
Too bad Heinz Lenz is no longer with us. He have them in shape and being "supers" in no time.

I thought it was spelled "zoopers" -- Follow the man in the Red Corvette !
Ah, the memories of sweating on the turf field, in the predawn heat and humidity, in mildewed PE gear that was only partially dried from the morning before. :)

Stuff don't dry too well when the humidity is very high and there ain't no Air Conditioning.

Not many. Definitely no more than a typical year. That said it just opened up yesterday.

Just got a call from my plebe son - they gave him his phone for about 5 mins as he is at the doctor's in DC. He and we are very concerned as they are checking out his heart as he is having some problems when his heart rate gets very high at the peak of working out. Something about brain chills. He said he wasn't at Walter Reed. We didn't really understand what is going on with him physically, and he has never had any medical issues that we know of except his medical waiver issue which cannot be related to this. He was in good spirits and so far seems to be handling Plebe Summer first week fine so far mentally and emotionally. I know he is in good hands and they will take care of him.

He also said the heat has had people dropping like flies during workouts recently. We're from TX in a medium-humidity area but he said the high humidity combined with heat has been brutal.

I always pay attention when @Capt MJ says the roller coaster clicks up another hill...

Prayers for your son and all the Plebes, Detailers and USNA leadership! Hope you have some answers soon. #yourmidismymid

@williamsdr3 it has been brutal. I've been in the DMV 22 years and the humidity is socked in here by the mountains to the west and the bay and ocean to the east. We've also been in an extended period with temps over 90 and feel-like temps to 105. Hoping your son gets back to fighting shape soon.

When the dew point is nearing 80 ... that’s real bad.

USNA chain of command will be tracking him very carefully, and these kinds of cases are daily briefing items to the leadership, or as developments occur.

Keep your roller coaster safety belts snugly fastened.

Don’t forget you can call the chaplains’ office. They are the de facto morale officers, good listeners, and usually go visit any mids held over night if that happens. Pastoral care of this age group is their ace skill, no matter the faith group.

Prayers for your son, your family, and all of the doctors managing his care. My son is a plebe as well and I feel this in my heart and soul. Truly, your mid is my mid. Sending prayers.

Spoke with my DD detailer on Sunday and she spent the evening at AAMC (Anne Arundel) one night last week with one of her plebes who collapsed from heat exhaustion. Thankfully her plebe ended up okay, but she said that there definitely seems to be more heat related illnesses this year than she remembers from her plebe summer. Lots of extra precautions being taken by USNA leadership and the detailers. I guess a good thing is there is a lot less plebe hack, bronchitis and pneumonia this year - since they are keeping the place so clean (relatively clean, as far as Bancroft goes).

Forgive me if this is off-topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread over this minor question:
What are the SCUBA certification opportunities on the Yard? I'm not sure my Plebe will be able to fit such an interest in during the packed ac year, but perhaps as a youngster, on up? She's already in D&B, so not sure if spring is a better semester for that (but with football being iffy, who knows, maybe fall after all)?

USNA Scuba Club.
She’ll get briefs/hear about/meet mids in ECAs.

Both of my guys were instructed by Dad to get certified this year, if possible. They are planning a lobster season trip to the Keys next year, during lobster season...July 29 and 30 this year. Had planned to go this year (they would snorkel), but then COVID.

DD got her SCUBA certification during fall semester of youngster year, through USNA’s program. Cost her a bit and took a few hours on the Yard. Had a choice of doing her final dives in Florida or in a lake in Virginia. She chose the latter, for cost and time purposes. Went diving in Florida last spring break, right before being sent home to quarantine. Said her training prepared her well, and the outfitter she used also trained federal officers, so she got to dive with a few of them.
