Post-Appointment Class of 2027 Hangout: PTR, I-Day, What To Bring, Leave Periods…all that endless new stuff

Posted on another thread but worth a post here as well...For all those P2B families...reach out to your local Parents clubs to get engaged (checkout the USNA website for directory, search for Facebook pages, etc). Most clubs host summer send off picnics prior to I-day and then offer support throughout the year.

Unfortunately, the USNA does NOT provide P2B information to Parents club prior to I-Day so there is no way for parents clubs to reach out directly.
As federal entities, the SAs observe all Privacy Act constraints with release of personal info to non-government entities, so perhaps more “inconveniently” than “unfortunately.” It takes old-school spreading the word!

Absolutely understand why SA's do not provide that information. And is definitely inconvenient, but fortunate, that they observe all privacy laws.

High Risk. Don't do it.
Risk Analysis:

Risk is the gap between Mission and Resources.

Mission. Successfully report to Iday and start PS. Fulfilling dream of attending USNA.

Resources. Healthy / Fit Body. Medically qualified.

Any medical procedure can reduce your resources. Complications can happen and threaten your resources. If Iday is 6 months away, then it's low risk. Seven weeks away is extremely high risk.
Not trying to offend anyone in the Dental Corps or at USNA, but I had mine out at NAPS and it was the worst dental experience of my life. Fortunately we had a prior enlisted DT in my company, so he took care of me afterwards. Get it done now.
Non concur.

I knew you did - for people new to the environment, I wanted them to understand the line that is drawn.

Many do not realize, for example, that the Naval Academy Alumni Assn, at usna.com, is an independent non-profit organization, which takes the lead with working with Parents Clubs, which USNA, as a federal entity at usna.edu, does not.

If they don’t have them pulled before I Day they will be fine. Remember that the dentists at USNA take care of 4400 or so Mids and pull alot of wisdom teeth. I had great dental care at USNA. I escaped USNA with mine and then the USMC took them. They will be fine.

There was a hilarious deadpan essay in The Log many years ago, musing as to where all the hundreds and thousands of wisdom teeth have gone and their final resting place or use. “The Lost Dentition.”

Parents, do not forgot that you fill out one item of paperwork to get your base car access so you can just roll onto the campus without having to go through the Gate 1 security building. On I-Day, if you have already submitted it, you will receive a paper pass that is good for the Plebe year, and then you can get the plastic card version later. Do this AFTER the current 1/C graduate! That way, your permanent card will not expire before your kid graduates!

Also, the Mid store will issue you a card that will allow you to shop there any time you visit the campus without your mid present. This can also be picked up during I-Day, or PPW.

(Being local, we actually got both the pass for site access and the Mid store card about two weeks later when there was much less of a crowd).
Thank you, Where is this paperwork found?

If I recall, it is in the full PTR paperwork that will come out to the appointees later this month.

My dentist recently told me it’s about time to get my wisdom teeth removed. Shoukd I do this before plebe summer? My counselor told me to contact dodmerb and that the recovery could potential pose an issue on my admission and acceptance on I day. With only a month and a half away, should I try and get them removed?
I would not, unless absolute emergency, too close to IDay. It doesn't sound like an immediate need. Way too high of a risk only weeks out from IDAY IMO.

DD went to dentist a month ago - said, wisdom teeth can come out. We asked if there was an immediate need for the surgery - he said, no, she is young and it would be a good time to do it. We explained about DODMERB and he said she can definitely wait, as there was not pain on her part and the WTs were not impacting on other teeth. So, she will wait for Christmas break. No need to deal with DODMERB, now.

Good plan. Just remember they will need pre approval before scheduling. Once they take the oath on IDay and are active duty, they need BMU to approve any and all medical and dental care off base.

My DD had her wisdom teeth done over Spring Break. No complications. She reported to admissions...sent an email and they said all was good.. Does she need to also report it to DODMERB separately?

I think it's okay to get them done now. My recovery was pretty easy and DODMERB did ask me too many questions. Just let them know you recovered well.

If you don't, you'll have a dentist appt during plebe summer and they might tell you to get them out sometime later haha. So either way I guess is fine.

I was curious if any parents considered sending their kids to an outdoor obstacle course training facility prior to I-day. Does that sound like some thing that would interest any parents to help build some confidence going into plebe summer? I’m looking for facilities and wanted to know if anyone has ever done this?

It isn’t worth it imo. Just be in the best shape you can be in.

The obstacle course provides mids the opportunity to either do well or help struggling peers succeed.

Everyone will struggle at something. Opportunities will be there to help others succeed as a team.

Have your DS and DD check their PTR. There is a test required after Jan 1 of this year for tuberculosis. Looks like two options, one requires two Dr visits and the other is a blood test. They are asking for this info by 5/15 so sooner than later is better.

I’m with @A1Janitor. There’s no point in “practicing” for plebe summer. Everyone will come in with their respective strengths and weaknesses. Few, if any, will have done a military-style obstacle course. They’ll all learn, excel and fail together. P2B should show up in great shape and with a great attitude. The rest will take care of itself.

This thread has been so helpful with other questions so I will ask some more:
When do most arrive in MD ahead of I-Day? Are there activities or events ahead of 29 JUN? Would we be ok to arrive 28th?

I can’t answer most. We arrived the afternoon the day before. Enjoyed a wonderful dinner. Walked around DTA at night. Went to bed early.

Neither of us slept much at all. Was one of the first there - went early because he forgot his vaccination card.

Day or two before. We arrived the evening of 2 days before. There aren’t ‘formal’ activities, but it’s a laid back atmosphere on the Yard. We checked out the Yard, saw some highlights, got the NFCU account opened, and spent quite a lot of time and money in the Mid and Gift stores. No crowds. Not sure if you could also work on getting your DBIDS early or not (we didn’t get one), but that’s another idea.

It’s such a magical time. For sure a top memory. It’s just special. Congrats.
