Post-Appointment Class of 2027 Hangout: PTR, I-Day, What To Bring, Leave Periods…all that endless new stuff

After getting back home we‘ve had some time to look back on the whole trip to drop off DS for I Day. Things I think I think:
  • Travel: Getting there Tuesday was a beneficial. Heard many stories of families encountering air travel issues. We happened to have a morning flight that avoided weather. The extra $ spent on additional Airbnb night was well worth it in case we would have had to audible to driving.
  • Lodging: Booked an Airbnb near the stadium as pricing for units within walking distance to the Yard were a bit bonkers. We were really happy with it as it was in much better shape than the unit we rented near gate 1 a year ago for summer seminar. Getting around Annapolis on Wednesday was relatively easy.
  • Bus: We decided to park at the stadium and take the bus for I Day. In hindsight we probably should have just tried to park at the Noah Hillman Public parking garage. We think we would have gotten a spot based on DS report time of 7:15. The bus ride took about 20 minutes to go a little bit more than a mile. Also, the lines to get back on the buses at the end of the night reminded us of Magic Kingdom after the fireworks. We decided it was short enough to hike it back from Alumni Hall.
  • Mid Store: It truly helped emotional and mental health as “retail therapy”. After DS report time our family went straight to store. It probably sounds silly, but my getting your parent mid store card with your name already on it makes you feel special and welcomed.
  • Plebe spotting: We were one of the families that waited on the east side of Bancroft for our DS to come out of Chauvenet Hall and get released to the detailers. It may sound ridiculous, but the two hour wait to spot him was worth it. It helped to know he had gotten through Alumni Hall and confirmed in our minds that his paperwork had been in order. We don’t come from a military background, so the first view of your kid in uniform was overwhelming. I’ll never forget the combination of shock and pride I felt at that moment.
  • Parents: Amazing how friendly everyone was. We met three sets of parents in our DS’ company by lunch time.
  • Lunch at Hospital Point: Highly recommend. Food from Mission BBQ was excellent and it was really nice to get in some open green space. The founder of Mission BBQ was there and took time to congratulate our family personally. The whole picnic and expo was extremely well done.
  • Oath: Recommend skipping trying to save seats. We had spots on the bleachers. It pretty much turns into a free for all the closer you get to 6:00. Instead I would just stand over by the East area of T court. Thats where the Plebes march in and the views from that area decent because it’s a bit elevated.
All are just my opinions! I’m interested to hear what other’s experienced.

Very well stated! Excellent recommendations for Class of '28 parents to follow. Congratulations to your Mid, too.

We bought the boxed meal for him. I’d recommend it from a convenience perspective. We didn’t have the full camp out set ups some folks had with coolers. He had eaten supper so he didn’t really eat much except for the cookie because he didn’t know if he’d get much sweets going forward.😀

Agree on all counts. Amazing how friendly everyone was, the feeling was of a family picnic for 3000 people, give or take, lol. The food at Hospital Point was amazing, Mission Barbecue did a phenomenal job, everything was so nicely organized. A good place to spot your plebe was also at the back of Alumni Hall, next to the foot bridge. Freshly minted Ensigns guarding the passage between Alumni Hall and the Nimitz Library were friendly and patient, having to turn away hundreds of people and answer the same question hundreds of times. They were happy to chat with parents staking out their plebes there, and talk about life at the Academy and their future service locations. The Supe and Bill The Goat mascot were there too for a bit. Photo op! If you had any question about getting somewhere, or anything USNA really, all you had to do was ask any person in uniform and the question was answered. I cannot get over how friendly and professional everyone was. Wow.

Midshipmen are living museums. It’s amazing how much they know. ProKno fills up that vessel weekly!!

I remember walking the yard with our plebe on our first visit. He pointed out sooooo many bits of info. Every monument we passed. And beyond. Facts, facts, facts. I was shocked at what he knew. Then he started on ships and all things Navy. They really are living breathing keepers of knowledge!! I’m not surprised about your ‘helpful’ experience!

This is what we did and definitely the most convenient means to getting some food. Daughter got to our blanket, eyed the sandwich and had zero interest. She was fed afterwards anyway.

I'm not sure if parents of 2027 members should continue on this thread, but I thought I'd share some comments. Between Thornton and USNA alumni site, I'm searching through thousands of pictures. As others have noted this Waldo hunt is tiresome until you find them!. My daughter and I have a resting frown face. I can't help laughing as I see her seriously focused on a plank or a pushup.

I finally saw her on some of the runs and she was far up in the front. If the pictures are in order, she's just behind 2 females. She's not cross country, but has played lacrosse and soccer, so I'm pretty stoked she's showing her workouts have worked.

On a side note, there are some characters in the class. Some are smiling and smirking. I'm not sure the detailers will be pleased, but it's kind of fun to see the impish behavior.

... in FLICKR U.S. Naval Academy, there are 300 pictures of Iday.

We also picked a spot on the grass and son was aware where to meet us after the oath. Dropped off a small cooler in the morning prior to his report time with cold drink and a couple snacks, which he barely got down. I think this is highly Plebe dependent (i.e. nerves, appetite, etc.).

may interest some of you to hear that my brother is a rising 2/c and currently a plebe summer detailer. I really wanted to be a plebe this summer, unfortunately didn't make the cut but still really interest talking to my brother and hearing his perspective.
Can you ask him to stop yelling at my daughter?

j/k. I understand it's part of the process. Good luck to you if you are re-applying.

We did PPW king hall lunch and also 2/C weekend king hall lunch. Way different vibes. Ppw it was vacant, and quick and nothing spectacular. Looking back, it would have been a better experience to go somewhere as a family and get the heck out of there.

2/C weekend was a blast. The whole brigade is there and it’s a truer experience. Even the shenanigans.
