Post-Appointment Class of 2027 Hangout: PTR, I-Day, What To Bring, Leave Periods…all that endless new stuff

Where do you sign up/pay for BBQ at Hospital Point?
Congrats to your DS. Looks like a family legacy.
Plebe families are sent email opportunity to buy in advance from Alumni Assoc. But we didn't as we were totally unsure what the day would be like. We had no issue buying that day. We were able to purchase at the entrance table to the tent (huge) at practically the base of the wooden walking bridge to Hospital Point. I think it was $20 or $25 all you can eat. Was well worth it in time saving and convience. Catered by Mission BBQ, good food and snacks as well as tons of cold drinks :)
IDAY was very humid last year

Keep your eyes open for "Alumni Parent" events or contact the Alumni Assoc (better idea).
Suffice it to say that when I was in your shoes, I was very appreciative.
When you get PM privilege's, I'll expound a bit.

Since this is your initial sf86, be familiar with it (been doing this for 30 years).
Suggestions:
With sf86 in pdf, print it, back to back. This is a draft only so use a pencil.
Be honest and accurate as much as possible. Don't worry so much about information gaps. You will sit down with a federal investigator later; provide updates then. After filling the blanks, make a copy and give it to your parents as a backup. As you go over the pages, at least 30% don't apply. If you don't have enough ink or paper, email the pdf to staples or office Depot.
Officedepot@printme.com
Staples@printme.com
Print it there. The code for printing back to back is 1-->2.
Since this time around it is only a reference for later in the USNA career do we need to fill out the Social Scuirity number blank on the bottom of every one hundred and something pages? Some things like that feel like they could be done later for the real attempt. Then again some pages need to be filled out with resources at home such as parents.

Not being lazy just dreading taking the time to finish that.

The PTR instructions indicate mids need to have a social security card. We already uploaded it on the USNA website. Will a color copy front and back be acceptable on IDay or do they have to bring their card?

They need the originals of any requested documents… SS cards, DL, passports, etc

What is the saving to shop at the mid store for major electronics? And do they sell i phones?
No tax. Somewhat reduced pricing.

I can't remember if they sell phones. But it is almost like a PX (post exchange) that you would find on any larger military base.

The NEX is a popular PPW trip. It was our first time, and our non-military family thought it pretty cool! It was one of the first trips our new plebe wanted to make that weekend. They have electronics. Military credentialed persons must make the purchase. Although they can use moms credit card, discreetly.

What are the must-do activities for a first time visitor to the Yard as family friend on I-day? There will be free "behind the scenes" tours, tours organized by the Visitor Center, patrol boats open for a visit. What tours/activities would the SAF experts recommend? Thanks!

If you like going solo I'd stop at the Visitor Center next to Halsey Field House and pick up a map. I'd stroll up through T-Court and visit Memorial Hall that honors Alumni that made the ultimate sacrifice. Find Edwin "Butch" O'Hare's name in the Class of 1937. If you've flown into Chicago, you now know who it's named after. On the way out take a gander of a midshipman's staged room in the Main Office area. It's off to the left passageway at the bottom of the staircase. Go to the chapel and see the stained glass work behind the altar of Jesus walking on water. Say a silent prayer for your plebe. Mosey on down to the cript of John Paul Jones underneath the chapel. Visit the museum not far from the chapel. Take advantage of the free stuff on Hospital Point. There will be tents out there welcoming visitors. If you're nice, I'd bet a librarian in Nimitz Hall would let you in to look around if only for a few minutes. That's enough time to make it to the third deck for a nice view. Visit a YP. Try to get a schedule of events and venues that are open in the Yard. After all that, you can get something to eat in Dalgren Hall. Better yet, head out Gate 1 and find an ice cream shop. Cheers.

Is the extra copy of all the forms a super preparation for I-day or is it something where several plebes during I-day are actually calling their parents to get some paperwork that they forgot out of their binder?
yes plebes to be have forgetton forms especially vaccine records and have to have every shot all over again on I Day!! just bring a back up just in case!!!!

More curious than anything, but…
Is there a final email or letter coming with PTR information (i.e. Company #, mailing address, etc.)?

DD is working through the last of the paperwork. She's made it through HS graduation, graduation parties, Senior Week at the beach, and has two concerts left. The stress is starting to show, so we are trying our best not to add to it.

She's a tough cookie, but I've never seen her express her nervousness like this. I keep counseling her to worry about Plebe Summer in small chunks. Focus on the next task and the next five or ten minutes, not the next 7 weeks.

Totally normal for her to get a little sassy before heading out. We saw it last year and heard from other parents they experienced the same thing. I actually asked my daughter just last week what advice she would share with incoming plebes. She said, “know the rates they gave you before showing up, remember it’s all a game, no one wants you to fail, and just push through to the next meal”. She also said “the 1st week SUCKED, but after that it was kind of fun honestly, in a sick and twisted way.”

Your daughter will do great! 💪🏼

Thanks so much.. It's great to hear how other families have come through the experience.
