Hello everybody,
I completed the Summer Seminar application which doubles as the preliminary application. I haven't heard anything back at all. I know SS is canceled but when will admissions get back to me with a candidate number so I can start my application?
Thank you! Stay safe!

Hard to say because USNA Admissions is prioritizing Class of ‘24. Unclear still when I-Day will be and how Plebe Summer will unfold. Getting that figured out will take precedence over starting the Class of ‘25 process. Be patient with them, for obvious reasons.

Dean Latta led an online session last week. According to DS, the guidance given was early May and to keep your eyes peeled for an email

The ECandidate Packet Letter (contains your official candidate number and information as to how to login to the Candidate Information System) typically comes out in the 1st or 2nd week of May. There has been nothing typical lately, however.

The class of 2024 received their ECandidate Packet Letters on May 6, 2019, but don't set your watch by it. It could be later this year, while they wrestle with all the other issues.

I heard it would be some time in mid-May, so I'd be on the lookout within the next week or two.

This is consistent with the email I received from USNA awhile back -- indicating more instructions will come out in early May. Question though is whether this means the application portal is open as soon as May - i.e., can I submit my application then. Or do submissions not take place until later in the summer like USAFA in July or USMA in August?

Last year USNA application opened in May. DS was able get his English and Math teacher recommendations before the end of his Junior year, as well as gave his Guidance Counselor a heads up that he was applying to the Service Academies and would be needing her to complete recommendations and activity verifications as the application process progressed.

This. My DS struggled with one of his teachers vanishing over the Summer (didn't/ wouldn't answer school email). It all worked out, but a PITA for him trying to get it done as early as possible. I agree the "heads up" and polite reminders to the teachers of deadlines are important. The app process is long and stressful for these young people as it is.

We had a similar problem. We had one teacher in particular who vanished over the summer after telling us she would do the math teacher eval. Since DS applied to 3 SA's this held up everything. We ended up having to get his Senior year math teacher to do it after returning in the fall.

Thanks for advice. Will my Guidance Counselor also have to submit a recommendation? I guess an "Activity Verification" means my Counselor will also have to attest to my list of extracurriculars? How is that done?

Thank you.

No your counselor will not submit a recommendation. In fact, no teacher will submit a recommendation to the Academy. What is submitted is an "evaluation" of your skills in math and English. Your counselor will as you said have to attest to your ECs. How this works is when you submit a form, you will attach their name and email and a link will be sent to them. Make sure you let them know its coming their way and follow up!

Each Academy, as well as ROTC, has their own requirements. For USNA you will provide your Counselor’s email address in the Candidate Activities Record section and once it is completed, USNA will email a link directly to your Counselor for verification (it might end up in their spam folder, so you might let them know to check there if they don’t receive it). My DS also provided a biography/resume that the Counselor could refer to (he comes from a large school, so she appreciated having this info ahead of time). Although not required or expected, he gave both his teachers and Counselor a small gift card as a thank you (especially since he needed them to provide info on multiple applications). Good luck!

My advice to prospective candidates is to get your teacher's personal email address and possibly their phone number (if they are willing) before school ends for the Summer. This way, you can contact them and remind them (if need be) that you're still counting on them to upload that data on your behalf. If they say they don't have the EMail (with the link), ask your Admissions Counselor (usually an officer at USNA) to "reset" that field in your Candidate Information System interface ("portal"), then all you have to do is re-enter the teacher's EMail address and they will get a new EMail from USNA with instructions and a link. You can do the same with the CFA if you decide to re-take it, or if your coach can't find the EMail (a pretty common occurrence).

What I have described above, is how it has worked in the past. Obviously this pandemic thing has made everything topsy-turvy, so your mileage may vary.

All good advice, I might also ad that prior to school releasing, our son had a private conversation with the principal (pretty small rural school) and let the principal know he needed the evaluations, how important this was to him. The principal said of course, he understood, and if at any point he hit a brick wall. to let him know and he could if need be as a last resort, enlist their help. Never needed it. I felt so badly for our DS math teacher. She switched to guidance counselor part way through the year, and she had to wear the math and counselor hat for 6 applications. She deserves a medal!

Webinar yesterday said by May 20.

This is helpful info. Were you on the Webinar yesterday? Are you from the DMV? I thought it was one of the best ones I've seen yet. I'm hoping USMA and USAFA will start up these Webinars (or maybe I just haven't seen the announcements).

Agree, it was a good one. Good messages on life too. Yes, we are from DMV. I was listening with my DS.

Wondering if these webinars are archived in some way. I mentioned to my DD and on the USNA website she could only locate the virtual admissions brief video. She missed the webinar she received an email invite for a couple of weeks ago and when she clicked the email link for it the next day it pointed to the same virtual admissions brief.
