Prep School Offer... Need Advise!?!?

My answer is simple....I applied to the class of 1982....received TWE and then an offer of FF Prep School...
I was appointed to the class of 1983...

Prep school is Willy Wonka's golden ticket!!!

Just my opinion...

Do you have any insights on how candidates are chosen for the FF scholarships? Thanks.

70keys.. Google is my friend.. take a look here:

" SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Young people are automatically eligible for a Falcon Scholarship by first applying to USAFA. The USAFA Office of Admissions then identifies potential recipients of the Falcon Foundation scholarship from a pool of direct entry applicants who are qualified, but not competitive for entering the next class at USAFA. Those applicants who are deemed qualified but not competitive are rank ordered and contacted for consideration of a Falcon Foundation Scholarship."

I seem to remember reading/hearing that there were typically between 60-100 FF scholarships offered each year.

Google is STILL my friend..

" FUNDING OF SCHOLARSHIPS
The Falcon Foundation acquires funds necessary to implement the scholarship program from public donations and a scholarship endowment. The number of scholarships awarded annually is set by the USAFA Admissions Office and is up to 100. Contributions and donations to the Foundation are tax deductible to the donor and tax exempt to the Foundation. Each scholarship is dedicated in honor of a pioneer in aviation or an individual who is distinguished in aviation or defense."

I guess the number of scholarships available would slso be dependent upon the amount of funding available for scholarships... the cost of attendance at participating prep schools..

It's important to remember that each scholarship for a Falcon is set at $5,000, and you are expected to foot the rest of the bill. However, every Falcon Scholar will tell you it is definitely worth it and we are certainly grateful for the opportunity!

Oh oops, okay thank you! I must have skipped that whole top section of the page trying to read about the requirements. Sounds like it will be a great second chance opportunity for those top some odd 100 kiddos. Here's to hoping!

Mostly, as a parent, I offered an ear and seldom my mouth, since the guys just needed to vent, not to have me "fix" anything. They took care of their own problems and they were stronger for doing so, and I was ignorant of much of it, and much happier in that position. :)
I couldn't agree more. As a parent, being there to listen and support your cadet is so important, not to fix their problems but to love on them like when our cadet called last week after attending the funeral of a friend and squad mate. That wasn't an event he planned on attending while still a cadet.

So happy to hear your DD accepted the Prep School offer! My DH was all set to go to UVA and was notified in JUNE that he had a prep school offer. He had to race home from his graduation "beach week" and get ready to head to USAFAPS. He was sent to the prep school because he couldn't get above a 425 on his verbal SAT score. Once at the prep school he did amazingly well. He played soccer, played baseball (which he had never even played in HS) and ended up graduating the prep school in the top 5% of his class. He went on to graduate from USAFA in the top 15% of our class, and then went on to UPT and was the #1 graduate in his UPT class! To this day, he says the prep school is the best deal going! He loved that year, was able to save a big chunk of money, and made life time friends!

The time where you see the biggest disenrollment is either 1) During Prep School Year, or 2) During freshmen/sophomore year. If you make it that far people usually tend to stay. Sorry for the late response by the way.

Well, you can't just "quit" after five minutes into the 2* year, so if you want out, you MUST do so beforehand. However, that is not to say that the AF can't decide to separate you, sometimes with some hefty repayment (of monies or enlistment).

For anyone who received a TWE and hasn't heard back about FF scholarships yet, you can still apply to the prep schools! Northwestern Prep, NMMI, Greystone, etc. they are great! I attended one myself as a free agent, and received my appointment in early January. That being said, attending one of these schools as a free agent is no guarantee. It was previously mentioned that if you receive a FF slot to a prep school you are basically guaranteed an appointment. All you really have to do is pass your classes (C or above) and get a nomination and you should be alright.

If anyone has any questions about attending a prep school as a free agent, feel free to PM me and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
