I have a scholarship through the national guard, so I am an SMP Cadet. After college, I might want to go active duty, but would I be able to chose which state/place I am stationed at?

As an active-duty offiver, you may have some input on where you’re posted. But in the end, you’ll be subject to “the needs of the Army.” Get used to that phrase, because the Army will ultimately decide where — and when — you go. If that’s a problem for you, well then...

You are a long way from requesting or being assigned a duty station. A lot will depend on what you branch when you commission. For some branches you are able to fill out a wish list for duty stations when you are selected for your branch. For some branches, Aviation for example, you will not find out your duty station until you are almost done with BOLC.

While you do fill out a wish list, it is not a guarantee you will get any of the duty stations you put on the list When in ROTC, once you receive your branch and it allows you to request a duty station you can ADSO for a certain station, again it's not a guarantee.

Your Battalion will explain what all this means when you start ROTC or you can talk to the Battalion ahead of time to get more information.

If your scholarship is through the National Guard, then are you certain you would be able to choose active duty?

Good point made above.

What type of Scholarship do you have through the National Guard. If the scholarship is a Minuteman or a GRFD then you will not be allowed to compete for or select Active Duty. You would be able to find a Reserve/National Guard unit that has room for a new 2LT in whatever Branch you select but you will be required to serve your obligation in either the Reserves or National Guard, not Active Duty.
