R Day / Beast "Supplies"??

I've heard people say that the blade should not be longer than your palm when resting the blade on your palm (Perpendicular with the fingers). I'm sure there's an actual measurement as some people have huge hands.

I've heard recommendations for a Casio G-Shock for a watch.

I've heard that the actual number measurement on the blade is that it can be no longer than 3 inches.

Then again, I've also heard that they don't actually get out a ruler and check, so...

I've got a knife I'm planning on bringing to Beast that's about that size, but it's an assisted opener(You push a thumb stud and the blade swings open, like a switchblade, but legal) Are there any special rules involving that?

for what it's worth, don't spend a lot for a watch during beast -- my son went through 2 -- the really nice one we bought w/ the bells and whistles, which was smashed w/in a few days of the second half of beast, and a cheap replica, which bought the farm about a week after we sent it -- lesson learned -- timex makes a great ironman w/ multiple alarms, stop watch and a night feature for about $35 on sale (kohl's coupons make them really cheap) :)

If you go back to the beginning of this thread, some of these topics have already been discussed. See the above helpful quote re. watches.

Highly recommend the G-Stock, it's issued to the US Navy SEALs, honestly, I just finished a book in them and what they are issued by their logistical support unit. Inexpensive and strong. My son has had one for years. But in all honesty, I'm getting him a Suunto Vector. It's a bit more, about 160. But has a compass built in, barometer, altimeter and other things. Thinking ahead for the longer haul and work in the field and what they need to do in Basic. Leatherman is coming out with a new device this September called the MUT, though to late for Basic. it's designed for the military and incorporates specific tools that are used on the Army rifles and such. Again, looking for something to give our son that he can uses for many years ahead.

I was just curious on the knife issue, given that, even though it's the Army, schools have restrictions as do government buildings. Though it used strictly for basic, someone probably could get in trouble for carrying a knife to class. And to some degree I would think that basic would want the plebes to cope and problem solve, verus having something to make their life easier.

Leatherman multi-tool

We bought our son (2013) a black oxide Wave Leatherman, which is the basic full-sized "most popular" leatherman. We had it engraved with his name.

It was not confiscated and he says he used it "for everything" including cleaning his gun. The measurements on the specs indicate a 2.9" blade length. :thumb:

I won't comment either.

New cadets will learn all sorts of terminology.

Knife laws vary heavily by state. Switchblades are considered illegal in some, not illegal in others.

If you get the joke smile! If not you'll learn it during Beast!

I only got the joke because my husband learned it in basic training and told me the story, "this is my rifle, this is my gun...."

I'm confused...

The list in the first post of this thread includes "Leatherman tool, disposable lighter, extra socks..."

But then I heard that everything that's not prescribed in Information for Candidates Offered Appointment would be taken away until completion of CBT. None of the items above is prescribed in the Information.

So should I bring them?

What about my passport, credit card and other items of the sort? I know these are not necessary for CBT, but if I bring them nonetheless, will they be taken away?

They won't take anything away unless it is dangerous, illegal, or obviously not allowed (cell phone, ipod, etc.). You can bring anything people so far have suggested.

As far as cell phones go, obviously we can't have them during beast but ive heard some people say bring them in your bag and they will store them until reorginization week. Is there any truth to this or is simply showing up with a cell phone in your possesion on the 28th asking for trouble?

Don't bring your passport. You don't want to risk getting it lost. Keep this at home and get it from your parents later on.
Cell phone - unless you are a recruited athlete leave your cell at home, esp if it is an expensive one. Otherwise you risk getting it broken or lost. Bags that go into storage are thrown around without care as to the contents.

Honestly, my kid never got her bag back. No idea what happened to it. Fortunately it only contained the t-shirt and shorts she wore to R-Day. The bag was a nice adidas bag though.

Just a Mom, If i am a recruited athlete would you reccomend bringing one? Is there a diffrence in storage for those in corps squad/ is there any particular reasoning behind that?
Thanks

Yeah - they will have practice during beast and can store it in their locker. No big deal really - certainly recruited athletes do not need to bring their cell. If they have them they MIGHT be able to use them.

Two years ago athletes in a particular sport were seen using their cell phones on a practice field in view of everyone. The comm was not happy; changes were made. Athletes usually have picnics the day before Rday and can turn gear bags over to the coach. These are kept in the locker room. Many include their cell phones/chargers in this bag, as they can get these back during reorganization week. They don't have to wait for parents to bring them on A day. The new cadets are issued computers during reorganization, and they have phones in their rooms, so cell phones are not really necessary prior to A day. However, it's nice if you have one so when you're trying to find your parents you can wander around with your phone talking to them until you find each other.

Bring a good knife, good insect repellent, miners type of headband flashlight with red and white lense, tooth brush, shaving kit, pen, some envelopes pre-addressed for mom (but they will understand if they hear little from you) and duct tape for your feet.
