Ratio of applications to various service academies

It all goes back to comp and comp states. Even if very few apply to the MOC it is not a given for acceptance...only 1 per slate can be charged to the MOC. I recall ly for the NOVA area they had @5-10 at least that were appt. on top of the MOCs charges, b/c the cadets were comp enough to get in via the national pool. That is when it becomes difficult for the candidate. You can receive the nom and not get the appt, but get in the national pool, yet when you go up against some cadets from thousands of miles away you will no longer care how many from your area are applying since the rules of the game just changed.

Where are you from that the MOC only had 4?

It would make sense that people from Washington would want the Navy, CGA or MMA.

When you look at a state like NC, it is evenly spread all the way around because you have every branch, and the SA's tend to get military children applying at a high rate (statistically --- not saying there are more of them, just saying I know alot of military children that apply to the SA's compared to the avg kid)

Connecticut, Yale University District. 2 hours from West Point. Most people don't even know where the AFA is. Very liberal and very few schools (mine included) are competitive schools. I know it's not a given, I still think that if I get in it would be a miracle. But if for some reason my MOC has someone with an appointment already, I have a Senator to fall back on. And if there's someone with an appointment there, then I'm screwed and will go to the national pool, like you were saying.

Oh also- very close to USMMA, USNprep just a state over in Rhode Island and like 30-45 mins away from USCGA. We really don't see much Air Force.

Seems many of you live in Washington. My son has a presidential and just received a nomination from Inslee for USAFA. Murray said no...any word when Cantwell will be done with her nominations?

Murray said no to my daughter too.
Cantwells are suppose to be out this month..
my Daughter did get nom from Smith.

They all talk and will not duplicate nominations.. Murray's office confirmed that to me. Although I believe it was WaMom that said that first...

not really any Navy around us down here.. in Tacoma, although I know there are tons in Bremerton and over there...

I am an Army brat, and my hubby is retired AF and yes those numbers are huge around Tacoma.. but nothing water based..

shoot I was standing in line talking to a gentleman lst week and he told me he was a merchant marine... I told him my D had applied to USMMA, and he had no idea that there was a USMMA run by DOT.. he thought I had no idea what I was talking about.. kinda cracked me up (he actually showed me his MM ID card).... wierd...

One of the posters here said they were in the 42nd district of California. Believe it or not, it is quite possible to have certain districts in the country have 1 or 0 applying to a service academy. In those cases; if the MOC thinks you're decent, you've got a great chance. Obviously; if you can't get a Presidential or similar nomination, then your goal is to be the principle nominee for your district.

This is why when people ask about how competitive a state is, there is no right answer. A state like California can have 50+ districts; with some districts having 100 applicants; and some districts having 1 or 0. Then there's states like Wyoming, Montana, Dakotas, etc... Wyoming only has one representative/district. But there will ALWAYS be some applicants. I don't have all the stats on how many applies in all branches, but there were about 19 applicants for Air Force. One of our senators lists his nominees. He listed a slate of 10. (The max he can nominate). There are obviously a list similar from the other senator and rep. Of those 10; I believe 4 got into the Air Force academy. 1 Presidential; 3 MOC nominations. That is between both senators and the 1 rep. And a 5th, FROM the Prep school who received that slot last year.

To put that into perspective; he posted a list of ONLY 8 to Annapolis. That would tell me that unless someone really had no business applying to a service academy, that he nominated all that applied. And he posted a list of 6 nominations to West Point. However; if you look at the 3 lists; you will see:

1) 3 of the 6 on West Point are on ALL 3 lists.
2) 2 of the 6 on West Point Are Only on West Point AND Air Force
3) 1 of the 6 on West Point Are Only on West Point AND Annapolis
4) 4 of the 8 on Annapolis ARE ONLY on the NAVY list
5) 5 of the 10 for Air Force ARE ONLY on the Air Force list.
6) 0 of the 6 for West Point ARE ONLY on the Army List.

And to answer the direct question about schools and disproportionate; of the 14 names scattered between the 3 lists for this senator's 2008 nominations; NO 2 OF THE 14 STUDENTS WENT TO THE SAME HIGH SCHOOL!!! And these 14 nominees were for the ENTIRE State. The other senator and Representative had similar lists and PROBABLY had many duplicate applicants from all 3 lists.

yeah, im the only one going ot an SA next year (about 500 in my class) there is one person who's a 1* at USAFA right now but i think she is the only person from my school at an SA right now. however, next year there are at least 2 people applying to USAFA, both of whom have a good shot. a lot of times it just depends.

good luck to you J Collins, and hope your daughter gets a nomination. i also live in western wa, (bellingham). has your daughter completed her app?

Out of a graduating class of about 900, I am the only one to apply for a SA. Nice thing is, for the past 4 consecutive years, there would always be one person that got into the SA of their choice (2006 USAFA, 2007 USNA, 2008 USMA, hopefully 2009 USAFA).

I was just looking at my senator's website, the one who gave me the nomination. It turns out that for the class of 2012, only 1 person was nominated! that's insane! this year I'm competing with 9 others.

My Daughters nomination packages all were sent by 11/11/08.

My daughter did get a nomination to USMMA (Her interview at the Senator's office was on the 14th, and they called her at school on the 15th).. the only one she wanted from our Congressman Adam Smith. Senator Murray turned her down, and Senator Cantwell is now just getting to work on hers... Another young lady at Steilacoom HS got a nomnation to USNA from the Congressman.

And keep in mind in Washington State you will not/should not get multiple nominations as the Senators and Congressmen communicate and try not to double up on anyone.

which senator did you interview for? i didnt interview for murray, but did for my congressman.
