Reapplying to USNA (after a turndown)

Thanks for your message, hopefulhockeymom. Will do! Understanding my question is a tough one without a clear, correct answer, I appreciate hearing opinions on the topic. Thanks OldRetSWO and IronmanDaremo. Since ice hockey isn’t a Varisty sport at USNA, I would imagine that playing varsity as a recruited athlete at a college would demonstrate a level of athleticism the academy would see as favorable over choosing to play club which doesn’t yet carry the same credibility. Obviously NRTOC involvement, especially, in her case, joining without a scholarship (since we missed the boat on applying) would demonstrate her true interest in becoming a naval officer regardless of financial support. Similar weight on each end of the scale?
As you understand, there is not a clear correct answer. Let me put it this way, as a USNA grad with 4 yrs on a Varsity team at USNA and the parent of a USNA grad with 3 yrs on a Varsity team at USNA I will tell you that if this was MY daughter, I would be advising/hoping for her to do NROTC*.

* I don't know of any professional Women's Hockey but if your daughter is at a level where Olympic or National Team is a strong possibility then going where the competition is strongest would be a much stronger consideration in my mind.

That said, NROTC with its access to additional nominations and demonstrated desire to be a Naval Officer would probably STILL win out for me.

I very much appreciate that insight and advice, OldRetSWO. I’m in agreement with all 3 of your points. There is women’s pro hockey, but they’re not making a living at it quite yet…. DD is more if a Williams/Amherst/Bowdoin player than a U of Wisconsin player anyway.

Fellow hockey parent here! I'd love to send you a PM but new members of the forum can't do private messaging until after they have been on the forum for a week and have five posts. When you get up to five posts, please send me a message! thanks!
Feel free to PM me if you can. I hit 5 this morning, but PM function hasn’t shown itself yet.

Just remember that joining NROTC with the sole purpose of leveraging that to get a spot in the Academy may not come across as favorably with the unit that one participates with.

Join the unit because the intent is to complete the journey and commission. Put everything into it and be the consumate shipmate within the unit.
This extends to a broader military career as well: bloom where you're planted. When you don't get what you want and you're trying to apply for something else, the most common measuring stick to determine if you'll get it is your current performance. How you're doing your current job is how they'll envision you at the next one, so stay focused and invested in the present and it'll serve both you and any people you may be leading.

Congrats!!! When did you hear? Our daughter had a dodmerb update hiccup that was quickly resolved so we are playing the waiting game but hope to hear some good news soon!

This worked out for me. I remember last year in April when I received a TWE, and looking at this thread... Now here I am almost a year later with a fully qualified offer of appointment from USNA and USMA. Don't give up the ship!!
Congratulations!!!! Last year I got rejected too so now I am reapplying for 2028, hopefully I hear something soon! The waiting is killing me 😭 I did everything they asked as far as getting more involved and taking harder classes so hopefully good results 🤞🏻

My DS is waiting again….second time. Good to go with USNA, been waiting for weeks on waiver review decision from USMA. Chem II, Calc Ii, physics, and rotc responsibllities keep him occupied.

May I ask...are you in KY? We're a split household & could've just as easily used KY as our MOC location. DS goes to school in Florida, so that seemed more appropriate. I'm kicking myself for that now. DS is still waiting on decisions, but if he has to reapply, it will be from KY. Looking for insight on how many apply, etc.

Between lexington and wva

Not too far from you...between Madisonville & Paducah. Same district, I think. Did you have lots of applicants?

I am not really sure, I don't know anyone else that is applying, but then again I am a college re applicant so I don't know many high schoolers who are currently applying.

I received my turn down from USNA today. I am planning on attending a local 4 year university, and reapplying next year. I have been reading over the information already posted. From what I am seeing, the most important thing is improving all the way around, but especially completing a plebe like schedule at a 4 year with high grades. (I am going to study Engineering)
During my application process to this 4 year, I was encouraged to apply to their honors college. Would acceptance there also help a re-application to USNA?
Also, I will have around 24 college credits via dual enrollment once I graduate high school in May of 24. Having these would exempt me from most entry level English and History classes, as I already have 3 and 2 respectively. I also have a chemistry and math dual enrollment credits.
Is there a good way to have a plebe like schedule while not repeating credits that I have already completed?
I am also waiting on a answer from NROTC as well.
Thanks!

Hey! As a college applicant who also did dual enrollment all of HS, what math and chemistry credits do you have if you don’t mind sharing?

I have a College Algebra course (labeled 1130 at my college). I have a Fundamentals of Chemistry (labeled 1130 as well).

Try to contact your Admissions Officer at USNA and receive clear answers to your questions from the official source, not from this site. That's not meant to be a knock on this site, which can provide good support in many ways, but you really should have an AO at USNA provide you with answers to your legitimate questions and concerns.
