Received appointment... and an F+ in calculus

good news, my grade was changed to a D! Since I'm no longer failing anything I think I am all set...

You don't have anything to worry about. Next year you will take Math Modeling and they will make sure you are fully prepared to do well in Calculus I in the second semester.

I am nearly finished with my application for USMA as well. I tried to raise my grades in Calculus and Physics my two hardest classes but they ended up as a C (Calculus) and C- (Physics). I'm going to complete my application but how good are my chances of getting in with these two black eyes on my transcript?

Finish the application and hurry! There is no point in abandoning it now, unless you have changed your mind. You will take both of those subjects at West Point.
BTW - what level of physics are you taking?

I'm taking regular physics and AP Calculus in addition to moving in my Senior year of high school. I think adjusting to the new school took me a while and hurt me but I can't do anything about it now. Just PRAY TO GOD that they see me as more than a C- on a transcript.

and keep in mind they add 10 points to our final grade, which is what that is. does anyone else's school do that too?

Nope, at my school the highest grade you can get is a 99% and they don't add anything for honors or AP.

I was just wondering...should I take AP Calc my junior or senior year and why?

I think if you can handle it you should take it. It might be best if you can take AB in Jr. year and than BC in your senior year, it should help you with the Calc validation test at WP since it'll be fresh in you mind.

Calculus and Chemistry

When I spoke with the USNA admissions folks yesterday, they mentioned Calculus and Chemistry as the two biggest "plebe-killers." That being said, it will pay big dividends at the Admissions board when they see you've done well in those in HS.

This is where USMA and USNA appear to differ.

The vast majority of USMA plebes will NOT take calculus the first semester - the few who validate it will jump into Calc II. Those who don't will take Modeling which WILL prepare you for Calc I. No plebe takes Calc I the first semester.
The situation is - hs math curriculums are so different. Many will get a kid through Calc but not concentrate on the basics necessary to succeed later.

If you did well on your Math SAT or ACT, did well in math through pre-calc and find that Calc is tripping you up - don't slack off but don't freak out either.
You will re-take it at USMA and be prepared for it.

The thing about that is involving another question: I was thinking of taking AP Stat also, and am wondering if the exam goes toward validation considerations for MA 206? Also, if you validate Calc 1, can you only go into MA 205 or can you go into MA255 also as an option? Finally, if you take the advanced core math classes, which one do you take your third semester?

Also, on an unrelated note, what are the names of the mil history baseline classes you take your firstie year?

That sounds good to me. I don't plan on slack of on any of my classes especially Calculus and Physics. I want to alteast get a B in both of those classes at some point before I graduate

So does anyone know how badly you have to do to lose your appointment?

I'm scared if I get a B I'll lose it lol it was never hard getting straight A's til now that I have something to lose.

America's Finest, I have one word for you: chill. I believe you have to show a pattern of screwing up in order to lose your appointment. Relax and enjoy your senior year. Have fun, avoid stupid.

haha, I know the feeling america's finest (I recently received the appointment!) and I do have a slight fear of what may happen, but just remember the folks at usma want you their, these next few months will never come back

we'll all be fine! June 29, mark the calendar

please answer...thanks in advance

Here is the deal on math -

I don't think you can validate the Stats class. AP Stats is not calculus based.
If you validate Calc I then the sequence is Multivariable Calculus, Diff Eq and Statistics.
You have 3 core classes instead of 4 core classes.

The core military history is two semesters of the Art of Military History, one normally takes as a firstie.
