Received appointment... and an F+ in calculus

To piggy back on this old thread...what about getting a D+ in a noncore elective? He has received his appointment. I’m paranoid but DS doesn’t seem concerned. He wanted to concentrate on getting straight A’s in all his other AP classes. It most likely would not affect his overall GPA too much, plus is the GPA calculated with electives or just the core classes?

I would be moderately concerned about the 'D'.

I'm just saying, I had a D and multiple C's in my last semester of high school. My appointment was fine, however they only got my grades a couple days before BEAST because my school got out late and had issues sending my transcripts. I'm doing fine now.

That is too much on the edge for me...my DS received his appointment in Feb of his Freshman year in college (he was a reapplicant). He really slacked and had 2 C's (one by the skin of his teeth)...3 if you count the lab. This was after straight A's his first semester. UGH! He called his FFR and discussed w/ him. It was fine, but I was ready to clobber him and he wasn't very proud of himself either. Fortunately he's doing significantly better at West Point.

I am a little lol at “ready to clobber him”!! That made me laugh. Does that ever go away completely?? It sounds though as if he learned a valuable lesson. That’s the important thing. And he didn’t do too much damage. That a bonus!!

For "regular" colleges, a D or F could cause a rescinding of admittance.

So I assume this means it’s not the same at West Point? Hopefully he gets a final grade of C but it’s a music class-not an academic class. He has straight A’s for every single class through all 4 years and his senior classes all be A’s except for this one. I want to clobber him too just like mom3boys!

I am saying I don't know....but just telling you what typical colleges do. I would actually assume that the service academies might do the same thing. But i have no knowledge.

I believe that many moons ago ( olden days) the academies tried to weed out non performers but today they are confident in the applicants they choose and the mentality is let’s get the right cadets through this program. This was a personal quote from an airforce general/ friend
