Remaining NROTC Boards

With the last board results out, I have lost my school of Midshipmen sharks that meander across the office peering in to see if I have any nuggets of wisdom handy. So how do I spend this spare time? Might as well try to feed the other school of sharks that circle :D

We've done some number crunching and there has been some "unofficial word". This means there is no one bold enough to say it actually true, but it's pretty darn accurate.

Separately, there is a chance that the February board results will be sent out this Friday, but more likely Tuesday (Monday is Pres. Day)

Here are the numbers so far:

Total Scholarship Numbers (What will be offered once completed):
992 URL
110 ISR
79 MSI
19 Nurse Option (this is NOT NCP but it is NROTC Nurse)
Total: 1200

To Date:
1010 Applications received/processed -- ~ 700 still being processed
459 scholarships offered
382 on the alternate list
169 non-selects (next round of board results will include those not selected for this year)

Nurse Option (Not NCP):
57 applications received/processed (none in the hopper)
9 scholarships offered
15 on the alternate list
33 non-selects to be informed at the next email of board results

ISR: 49 scholarships offered
There is no alternate list here. NTAGs send their ISR choices for review by NSTC. If there are no discrepancies in the package those go straight to approval. If you are doing the math from the first set of numbers, NTAGs are working on 61 ISR nominations

MSI: Any applicant who selected MSI on their application will be looked at during the MSI board in April.
One thing of note is if the MSI block was checked, then an HBC or HHE school needed to be in your list of 5 school choices.

So, what does all of this mean? *** This is complete conjecture on my part. And I have had too much caffeine, so please do not make long-term financial plans based on this portion of the email. ***
It all comes down to that final 700 or so remaining to be processed. Many of these came in during the last days and weeks of the scholarship season. Sometimes that means the quality of the package isn't there because it was rushed. But sometimes these packages are people who realized that USNA or USMA or USCG said no, but they have really good packages regardless. I don't know because we haven't seen them.

If the vast majority of packages come in and aren't strong, then we go to the alternate pool and start pulling. But if the remaining batches are all rock stars, then there may not be a need for an alternate pool.

So, there's something for you to mull over on a Wednesday mid day. If you have a PhD in math and want to discuss some bizarre statistical data point with me, please know I am a Philosophy major and I will just stare at the computer screen and then log off. I scribbled these notes on a 3x5 card while listening to a zoom call.

Separately, I know some of you will be yelling at clouds and want to tell me how awesome your DS or DD are. For what it's worth, I agree, they are awesome. But I polled the other moms and dads and they told me their DS and DD were awesomer than yours ;)

Sir,
Just a question on your last paragraph - by "side load," you mean those alternates who enroll in NROTC at college without a scholarship and reapply for a scholarsihp based on their first semester grades and performance?
That's what he means. There are actually 3 opportunities to apply for a side-load, for 3 semesters after the first semester, unless something has changed since DS' days at Carolina.

EDIT: Of course I cannot read his mind.

Hasn't changed.....and you can read my mind, but it's a minute novel and boring.

There is also a thing called advanced standing. But if I start talking about that, smoke will come from the viewer's ears.

Just curious. If MSI is checked on the application, is that an additional consideration if not selected during the regular board or is it the only consideration?

Sir, I'm so sorry, but I don't remember what my son put on his NROTC app when applying for the scholarship. I looked to see if I could find a post explaining what URL, ISR, ....etc. all means and I can't figure it out. Would you mind to explain to this silly middle-aged mom what those acronyms stand for?

Also, you may have already answered this but if he has not gotten word at all and his online scholarship page says "no decision has been made", does that mean he will still be considered for the 3rd and final board? Thank you for your time and patience with moms like me.

There is a list of acronyms somewhere on here, but I am not sure where.

So....
Unrestricted Line Officer. Why isn't it just UL....no one knows....at least I don't
Immediate Scholarship Reservation
Minority Serving Institution -- typically referring to HBC -- Historically Black Colleges or HHE -- Higher Hispanic Enrollment and there has also been use of the term HSI - Hispanic Serving Institutions
I also mentioned the NCP or Nurse Candidate Program. Separate thing from NROTC and I didn't want people to confuse them.

Just curious. If MSI is checked on the application, is that an additional consideration if not selected during the regular board or is it the only consideration?
It is an additional look. When they fill out that portion on the application, there will be a statement along the lines of....if you are not selected for the national scholarship, would you be interested in an MSI scholarship?

Thanks for the clarification!

Thank you! You sure seem like a great guy and someone I would enjoy meeting in person. Thank you for ALL you do for our young people who are planning to serve this great nation of ours. I have a 21-year old son who is an Air Traffic Controller in the Navy and I have gotten such a quick education on all things military. Still unsure about all the ROTC and SA stuff pertaining to my middle son. Thank you again sir!

They say I have a great face for radio 😁 But you never know when paths may cross. I was at a high school recruiting event in Virginia when a very bright young lady mentioned she just got her notice about a Nurse Scholarship to Norwich. At one point she looked and said....."Ohhh, you're the GWU PNS guy." Then it dawned on me I was building a fan base. Ok...a fan base of 1, but let me have my moment while it lasts.

My last sea tour was plankowner CO of LHA 7. Fantastic group of Air Traffic Controllers who try to keep all the bees hovering around the hive in a nice and even spacing arrangement.

Are you familiar with FACSFAC? It is a group of ATC that work in radar.. that's what my kiddo does and he loves it. But, it is HARD! He was 1 of 3 remaining out of 12 original people in his school group at Pensacola. Again, thank you for your service and for your help during this nervous time for all us families!

What is the thought process for a College Programmer who just received a National Scholarship to attend NSI instead of CORTRAMID with his 4/C peers? He has been actively involved in his unit for a year and I would think that giving him the exposure of all 4 service branches in CORTRAMID would be more valuable to their ongoing training.

I am not sure what you want me to say. A flag officer has issued a policy and the expectation is that it gets carried out. He should feel free to discuss with his NROTC chain of command. There are potential options, but it isn't my call. And you don't seem persuadable from my view, so it's best you discuss that with your son. If you are passionate about it, you can reach out to his PNS. But I can't offer you anything further, nor do I want to.

There is enough time to do both based on each being 4 weeks or so. Per the proposed schedule slots in the other thread, it is entirely possible to do both.

I actually hope my son does get to do each in his journey. I think they both hold high value in different ways.

Wow. Amazing detail. Thank you. Sit and wait time now for Nurse Option news

I just received a NROTC Navy Option Scholarship yesterday. So I am pretty sure this week boards are coming out! Hope this helps y'all and best of luck.
@GWU PNS I applied to GW so I might be seeing you in the fall... Cant wait to see that great radio face.
Well now I have to see if they (NSTC) snuck one past me. They might be releasing the February board results now and that's why you heard from them. Or....they were slow in sending emails from the late January board.

But it would be awesome if GWU was your first choice. Assuming it was, I can swing down to the Provost Office and see how the admissions results are coming along.

If you are heading here with us, check out our FB page and you can send an email to the main NROTC email on our webpage. Your NROTC advisor will be LT Cameron McKee.

Welcome Aboard! 😃
