I am currently sitting on alternate status for the 4-Year NROTC scholarship. I know I just need to wait but especially based on what I've seen about other applicants I'm unsure about my chances so I'm exploring other options. One such option I've heard about would be enlisting in the Naval Reserve then applying for the 3-Year scholarship with a hopefully more competitive packet since I'll have some college grades and reserve experience. Is this possible with the Navy Option including the 3-Year? I have a friend who's doing this with the Marine Corps and their recruiter told them they were also able to apply to Marine Option NROTC at the same time but I don't know if this works for the Navy as well.

I was also just curios as to if having experience enlisted in the reserve would help with my packet for the 3-year Scholarship and possibly placement after graduation. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Talk to your OFFICER recruiter about this. I found out that as far as Marines go, this isn't an option.

You have excellent chances at a 3 year as a NROTC College Programmer. Being in the Reserves doesn't improve those chances and you could always be called up, interrupting your college years/studies. Don't do the Reserves.

Totally agree! All of the College Programmers in my son’s 4/C class picked up scholarship last year. Yes, it was a small class but that’s a great percentage! Unfortunately, our son’s SSN was entered incorrectly so he’s unable to contract (due to DODMERB being down, it can’t be fixed) but that’s another story 😬. We try to find something positive out of it: “Just think of the empathy you’ll have for those you lead going through a rough time, when it’s outside of their control.”

overwhelmingly, the people who apply for the scholarship after joining as a college programmer, are granted it (if they have the PT ability, etc)

My unit, every single person was granted it, multiple years ina. row
