Roller coaster I: Get Us (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘26 🎢

I just remember my Dad coming home from work all the time in them, so it is odd to not see mids having to wear them.

They will wear them every day for a while, if they receive a TAD CO (or others) assignment after graduation.

What’s REALLY weird? Is seeing your kid in them, getting saluted all over the yard 😆

I also meant that my *youngest* will wear them this summer. So both ll kids did.

It is really weird the first few days after you commission! You haven't really changed, but you go from giving to receiving customs and couresites overnight! Even though, everyone earns their commission, the imposter syndrome is palpable.

Way back when, 1/C MIDN did actually wear khakis during their last semester. The idea was that if they looked like officers, they'd start acting like JOs from a professionalism/conduct standpoint. That obviously didn't last.

Uniforms have always been a weird thing at USNA. For the longest time, USNA didn't allow us to wear cammies outside of field training and very specific events. The reason being that we looked like trash when we wore them (poor sleeve rolling, bad boot blousing, etc.). There was eventually a realization that we looked bad since we never wore them often enough to make sure they looked good (most of the time we just wore boots and utes when we did wear them). As a result, Tactical Thursday was born.

Believe that is "0 Block." My understanding is if they don't have anything scheduled during that block, it is packing and preparing for moving, some training for various stuff, and some town liberty.

But others with experience would know better!

Son did say that his YP cruise stuff (Block 1) is about 10 days of training on the Yard, liberty, then 2 or 3 day boat trips with port liberty at their destinations. And said for the first time in years, they are going South! Charleston and Savannah.

DS has block 1 Protramid and that I think is on the East coast he said - maybe Norfolk? And block 2 is YP cruise. He thinks they are going North. Does anyone know if they need to be able to switch out stuff in between to take with them? I'm happy to help him this time move things to storage - that is safe and climate controlled (cousin's house) but how often will he have to get to it?

Yes, they will need to strategically pack their gear for each summer block. They must be prepared for a last minute change to training assignments. Having zero hour access to the MIDN stored items is critical.

During DS youngster summer, he moved out for an LREC trip to the land of fire and ice (commissioning week and zero block). Moved back in for two volunteer summer classes (had to move rooms in between the two courses). Moved out for a short leave (8 days), moved back in to stage to leave for Protramid, and moved out to go to San Diego for Protramid. Loved that time in San Diego. Had some evening liberty, I drove out and we did some eating, Padre game, zoo time etc. Then, he moved back in for reform. And then moved into his assigned room.

Whew, I'm exhausted thinking about it. He did it all on his own, with a pick up and drop off from a sponsor. Unfortunately the sponsor left for a huge chunk of the summer and he had hell getting access to his things. Not all sponsor relationships work out 100%. He has now been adopted by the best sponsor family ever.

Typically Norfolk is the East Protramid location.

And ProKnow is done! Son said they have their "Professional Competency Board" (PCB) in two weeks. Basically it sounds like an in-person "final" for all the ProKnow.

Sea Trials will be here before they know it.
This is a very exciting time for Plebes, and their parents.

Congrats to ‘26!! Almost #PlebeNoMore!! And a Youngster a short time after that!!

Ask your Plebe to have someone photograph the ‘changing of the boards’. That happens after ‘23 commissions. It’s a pretty momentous, yet underrated occasion. No hoopla, but making it through that first year….probably a top ten, I’m my book 💯

Just be forewarned, this act is the fastest thing a MIDN does in the entire time they are at USNA. From the time the ceremony is over to the time they have already switched their boards is difficult to detect without a highspeed camera. Be ready.

Is it an impromptu change or does someone give them a signal to make the change?

Kid said, "Uniform distribution opened today, so I'll get mine soon. Choker whites too."

They get so much stuff!!
