Roller coaster I: Get Us (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘26 🎢

Kid just arrived in Savannah. They sleep on the YP nightly. Not sure how long they are there for. A few days, I think.

Said the Atlantic was rough. Lots of kids puking, including him. Even the LT mentor wasn't so hot!

After there, back up to Charleston I think. They leaped over it to get to GA.

Yup. My son spent his layover at sea world for free. Saved 130 bucks. My understanding is one free ticket per year.
It also applies to Busch Gardens. 1 free ticket per year (Busch Gardens or Sea World but not both), and you can bring up to 3 "dependents" for free same day as well

Do y’all know if you can request what platform you’re on for PROTRAMID?

I apologize, I should’ve been more clear. I was asking if you could select what platform you’re on during Surface Warfare week?

If you're asking about specific types of assets, then no. FWIW, you do visit different types of ships. I visited an Arleigh Burke-class DDG, a Zumwalt-class DDG, and both flavors of LCS during my SWO week. I was on an LHD for my 3/C cruise (we did PROTRAMID as a 2/C back in the day).

You can request assignment to a particular type of ship for your 2/C and 1/C cruises. Specifically for your 1/C cruise, if you really like the ship you're on and the command likes you, you can blue chip (have a reserved spot) for that ship come Ship Selection after Service Assignment.

These are operational, working, Navy and Marine units, ships, squadrons, etc. - it’s whoever can best handle an influx of midshipmen and bear the least disruption to their schedule. Needs of the Navy vs wants of a mid, guess who wins…

Re choosing a certain kind of ship: Be open to the adventure. Consider it an opportunity to explore.

DD did her youngster cruise on an LSD. On paper, perhaps not the sexiest type of naval vessel. It’s not a destroyer or a carrier or a sub. But she loved seeing the coordination between sailors and Marines, as well as a different kind of mission. Not launching jets or firing missiles or diving deep, but delivering Marines to shore. I think it’s where she first got the idea that USMC might be a cool warfare community. Three years later… 😉

100% what @MidCakePa suggested. Be open minded. It’s great to have a plan. To think you know what you want or love.

Sometimes that can narrow your ability to experience wider things beyond you or outside of your initial field of interest.

I recall something like, “‘make plans, hear God laugh”. Or something along those lines.

My mid got Princess Leia’ed this morning by this session’s Summer Seminar squad. Funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time! 🤣🤣

Maybe start a new post/thread "USNA shenanigans". My DS tells me stuff from a witness point of view such as Midshipmen going back to Bancroft drunk and not allowed to go on leave during Thanksgiving and Christmas. During "100 nights" his room was ransacked. Firsties pulling rank and all he hears is "blah, blah, and blah."

Is it bad that as a Covid mom for a high school 2020 and a mom of a USNA 2024 that I have stopped looking for pictures?

Ones I thought were DS weren’t. Ones I hoped were him weren’t. He is not in the class profile image, and he isn’t alone in that.

If your kid is in stealth or dodge the camera mode it is ok. Frustrating as hell. But okay. It is kind of a good window into the life that comes from a soon to be naval officer mom or dad and the things we can’t talk about.

I'm curious, when do our Youngsters know when to be back in August for Brigade reform? I was trying to buy a ticket for my DS and called him. He is currently on Protramid and didn't know the date. Neither did a Mid he asked next to him. Southwest had a great sale - but I didn't get him a ticket. Just trying to figure things out. Thanks!

They will get official word from their company. At some point.

I jumped on SW’s sale, and purchased a ticket for aug 15, and one for aug 16 (per my mid, who also doesn’t know reform yet, but used the calendar and ‘guessetimated’). I used points accrued. But even if you purchase, you can cancel (or change) and eCredit bank the refund or difference. Which doesn’t expire.

You can make a best guess, and adjust if needed.
