Roller coaster I: Get You (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘28 🎢

How does reform work? I’d like to drive up to the Yard and drop some things that the boy didn’t want to have during Plebe Summer. However, if the Yard is crazy with everyone back, maybe another weekend would be better. Also, if I bring him lunch, where can we eat? I’d imagine there’s an outdoor area he can sit with me and eat…similar to I-day?
Follow advice from @Capt MJ and @PlebeNoMore27 however when DS could not leave the Yard we have eaten in Dahlgren (upstairs) and Smoke Court at the picnic tables. Really any outdoor space that the MIDN's are allowed to go is open for gathering. Again your DS will know best.

There is a picnic pavilion on Hospital Point, at the bottom of the hill the cemetery and the old hospital building (now Naval Institute) are in, at the end of the road running alongside the field. Peaceful, quiet, view of the water. I walk the dogs over there every few weeks, and we often sit there and just watch the Severn. Off the beaten track.

Sunday evening goodbye was hard! Someone in the BLB group said “How come none of you warned me that being a Naval Academy parent meant experiencing the raw emotion of dropping your kid off at college twice?” And I’m seriously feeling this today.
DW was the same: many random bouts of crying on the walk back from the Yard like it was the first time…

During one trip home after seeing DS (I think maybe Oct of youngster year), DW cried the entire 8+hour drive home. I thought I had said something dumb (which the usual case) but in fact she realized he would never be "moving home" again.

I kinda remember making a flippant comment as my parents took me back to college 2nd or 3rd year. Something like, "Ah, home" as we pulled onto campus. Apparently that sent my mom into a 30+ year tailspin she still hasn't recovered.

Now, as a parent, I get it. DS spent his final hours home before heading off to Ensign Kindergarten cleaning out his room. Emptying desk drawers, tossing old electronics, etc. Similar to when he left for plebe summer, although much more complete. But, this time, I know there are no more 3-4 week leaves in the future to look forward to. Maybe a week here or there if we are lucky at some point over the next 5 years. I also know he likely won't fully understand what that means for 20+ years.

My parents sent me pictures of what they did to my bedroom during Plebe Summer. I slept in a guest room every time I came home to visit. But as a basketball player my parents knew leave would be very few and far between. The longest run I had home during my Mid years was 2 weeks during 1 summer. Other than that it was a week in the summer and a few days at Christmas.

Did anyone play "White Christmas"when the Plebes formed up after PPW ? I think that has become verboten...but sometimes occasionally an enterprising upperclass will blast it over T-Court at the end of the PPW.

Talk about impact....recognizing that next time most Plebes will see their families is at Christmas. (I know times have changed, most will at least get home for Thanksgiving and many visit during the year, but the playing gets to both Plebe and Mom!)

It wasn’t blasting at t-court but my plebe, in his last text before he turned in his phone, confirmed they were playing Christmas music inside Bancroft.

the yard will be so packed all this week with all the brigade moving back in, cars everywhere. mine is a firstie she moved back in today.....she did say the plebes are still in plebe summer - they are not allowed to talk to them - so once your son has his phone back he can share a good time for a drop off. For future visits, I would bring lunch to my girl her plebe year when I was in town on Sunday - we would eat together on a bench overlooking the water when the weather was nice - when it was cold we could go into Dahlgren Hall - there are tables in there you can sit and eat. When plebes have liberty on the yard usually on Sunday it is nice to go and see them. it is always a good idea to see if any of his roomies or friends need a good take out meal too - I always brought food for her friends and roommates and they loved it. I hope your son had a great summer!

Thank you…this is very helpful.

If you do make it to the Yard, in the past they have done a "reform" parade where the Plebes march with the rest of the Brigade in the stands. I caught this parade a few years ago when we drove DS back for reform. It is one of my favorite parades as the Plebes actually know how to march at this point and the upper-class shout encouragement for their companies from the stands. Much less formal than the normal Formal parades as a Brigade.

I know there a a Turnover Parade. Today or tomorrow. Someone will know.

Hell-O morning is Saturday. No Hell-O night this time. Not sure if the parade would be part of that. Kid said the Plebes are still off-limits, but in their company area.

I (very) vaguely remember this from my own Plebe Summer.
Probably because it was the LAST parade I marched in until the day before I graduated.

A fun little gem of a parade. Mids relaxed in the stands. Parents thrilled to see their plebe in near-end-of-PS parade. (Parents, there is no liberty afterwards for plebes, it’s back to the grind.) if you live nearby, fun to go see. If you don’t, save your $ for a weekend visit or the Thanksgiving air fare.

Encouragement… we can call it that from the upper class. They do go wild when a poor Plebe drops. Mostly the upper class are happy to just not be marching.
When we lived in one of the quarters on Worden Field, one of DH’s great delights as a USNA grad was watching the parade from our screened porch with his feet up and a nice cool beverage. Meanwhile, I’d be out there watching to ensure my Batt wasn’t the worst-looking or had the thinnest ranks or wasn’t doing anything foolish, like stepping out of their shoes, etc.

We also got serenaded by regular USNA Band and D&B practices.
