Roller coaster I: Get You (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘28 🎢

During one trip home after seeing DS (I think maybe Oct of youngster year), DW cried the entire 8+hour drive home. I thought I had said something dumb (which the usual case) but in fact she realized he would never be "moving home" again.
This really hit me this morning. Our littlest woke up looking for big bro, it broke my heart to tell her he had left. She then asked how long would it take for him to come live at home again, and have his room back forever. The realization that he will never “be back home forever” again hit me like a brick wall. I held my tears just long enough to make it to my bedroom, then had a long, ugly cry!

I’m so sorry! This had to be so tough. I had that moment in a grocery store aisle and I abandoned my cart and fled to the car, couldn’t drive for a while.

But mine was easier as it only impacted me. Not a little sibling. I can’t imagine.

Hugs to you.

Make sure you convince any identical twins in your class they want to be same set detailers.
LOL..that would be fun. I had an identical twin in my Company...brother was in another Company but pretty close to ours.. During first week of Plebe Summer, one of the detailers looks over (we were doing paper work in King Hall),. does a double take, and barks out "[NAME], do you have a brother here...? " "Yes sir..." "[Name]" don't you even try it !"

We sponsored 2 identicals. Both were first set detailers. Identical down to the tiny mole on left temple and voices. They managed it very carefully. The plebes were astounded at the mere seconds it took for them to accomplish a uniform race change. Many other hilarious and crafty tactics.

I don't know of any identicals at USNA during my time there but when I was a plebe, one of our company firsties had an identical at the Hudson School for Wayward Boys. They did a uniform switcheroo before A/N football which fooled all but the classmates since they apparently had done this at other times in the preceding years.

Must have been hard on the West Point brother...knowing that his brother got into USNA and he couldn't!
:)
Totally!

But the WOOP brother branch selected Medical Corps but since USNA did not offer Medical that year, our guy went subs.

Might want to be careful publicizing you are a sponsor family. You’ll have a waiting list of Plebes asking for CaptMJ’s family.

We have sponsored since the mid-90s. We have some right now but had to skip a class year because DH has “been in the shop for repairs.” We are doing friends and family referral now - the sons and daughters of our alumni sponsor family have been attending NASS, STEM, sports camps this year. We’ll do a two-way ask with them, should they be offered and accept appointments in the coming years, and wish to have their photo in the array downstairs in the mid family room. We used to take 5 plebes/year, completely random, plus anyone the Sponsor office called and needed a home for. We had to adjust the intake valve to the F&F plan just described. No shortage of Fleet and Corps alumni calling and making referrals. It’s a joyous thing.

Hi, everyone. Sorry if this has been asked and answered. DS has requested a mattress topper for his deck. He said his two roommates have them and that they help them sleep. Anyone have any experience with this? Big question is the size. Don’t want to send one that doesn’t fit. TIA.

I assume you mean his bed, not deck. They will have a regular or x-long twin.

Ask your mid to use a tape measure app or other smartphone methodology to measure his bed or roomie’s mattress topper.

I’m such an idiot. I meant rack and said deck. Lol. Sorry. Thank you so much.

When we lived in one of the quarters on Worden Field, one of DH’s great delights as a USNA grad was watching the parade from our screened porch with his feet up and a nice cool beverage. Meanwhile, I’d be out there watching to ensure my Batt wasn’t the worst-looking or had the thinnest ranks or wasn’t doing anything foolish, like stepping out of their shoes, etc.

We also got serenaded by regular USNA Band and D&B practices.
Always loved that in our era, the Chief's band played Sousa's Liberty Bell March as the march off music. At that time, that tune had a different connotation.....

Kid said your kids had it easy for Hello-O morning. His company just had some ground fighting and called it a day.

"Back in my day, there was yelling, bear crawls, etc. etc.," per him. Everyone's Plebe summer was the last real one. ;)

AC year starts tomorrow! Kids will be doing chow calls and chopping to get out of Mother B as fast as possible.

It is questionable if a Mattress Topper may or may not help them sleep since they could probably sleep on a stone wall. From my understanding it does however prevent the morning remaking of hospital corners and perfectly made military rack (only requiring a minor touch up) when seconds count.

I have pictures of Plebe with roommates and other plebes in the tunnels breaking out one night on Ho Chi Minh Trail, but they are still classified. I think they shut down the old tunnels to the 7- eleven?
