Has anyone that received an NROTC scholarship had a representative come to a school awards ceremony to award the scholarship? My school has an awards night to recognize every student who has received any kind of scholarship and normally there is a representative from the school or organization they received it from. If so, I’m not sure who to contact about the awards night.

My daughter contacted her University ROTC instructor and he said he would go to her awards night, but her school is only about 30 minutes away. I’m not sure how it works if you are going out of town for school but your guidance counselor might have some suggestions.

the local recruiting office told me they would come in with a big fake check and make a speech and then they keep the fake check in the recruiting office. My school has an awards night and a ceremony during the day.

If you contact the cadre at the unit she plans on attending they will be sure someone is there, if they aren't there themselves. Be sure the school allows it. Many do not allow military scholarships to be presented.

Side note: I live in MI and got a scholarship for the university of southern california

My son received a NROTC scholarship at his HS senior awards ceremony from a local officer recruiter. The scholarship was for a school that was several hours drive away and they could not be present for the award. However, I improvised and called the local area 'officer recruiter' to see if they could help out. They were happy to help. Not sure if the same will work in Michigan, but good luck!

At my son's HS, they usually issue large checks to the cadets who have earned scholarships, but I think the NJROTC Instructor presents them. I believe that the army or navy (or whatever military branch) supplies the checks.

First DS was told that they wouldn’t have time for his scholarship to be presented, that if they did that for everyone we would be there all night.
Second DS, same school, did allow his scholarship to be presented, and, sure enough, we were there all night! Was actually pretty comical and really sad at the same time because there was a girl who earned an Air Force Academy appointment in his class, the Air Force version of BGO was a local politician up for re-election, so he did this 15 minute presentation. Then it was DS’s turn; a Chief from the office that did his application walks up to the podium, says, “—- has earned a 4year Navy ROTC scholarship,” thrusts the 4 foot check into his hands (not even showing it to him or the audience) and walks off the stage and out the door.
Sometimes, the image of what it will be like is not always reality. Good luck.

Thanks. My school is small so I don’t think we would be pressed for time in that situation [emoji1360]

My DD would have been mortified if some bigwig politician or uniformed stud had brought her onstage in front of the school to present an oversized fake check. For all her accomplishments in academics, athletics and extracurriculars, DD just doesn’t like the spotlight being shined on her individually. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I don’t begrudge kids — and their parents — at all for wanting to be recognized for their great individual accomplishments in high school. They’ve certainly earned in. That said, once on active duty, as the leader of men and women, commissioned officers will know that effective leadership is marked by the willingness to absorb all the criticism while deflecting all the praise toward their team. There’s no better way to earn respect and credibility as a leader.

Same with DS. Seriously be cognizant of you kids wishes. It’s their last few days of just being a normal classmate.
