Hello y'all,

Recently, due to adverse circumstances, I was forced to switch my High School from a small vocational school (~180 students) halfway through the year to a much larger (~2000 students) school. I am currently a rising sophomore, and outside of school I'm a competitive fencer (E rated), have been trained as an armorer, am an Eagle Scout and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, volunteer at my local library, and I might be picking up another extracurricular sport in the next couple months. I have not taken any ACT's or SAT's yet, but I plan to soon. Do y'all think that switching schools will affect my application at all? Is there anything I can do to strengthen my application?

My son changed high schools before sophomore year (large school to equally large school). No adverse effect.

Take chemistry, physics, calculus.

Seek out leadership roles.

And enjoy high school!

I think it probably can only help. You mentioned small vocational school, your new school seems traditional and large. Your new school probably has lots more options like AP, STEM courses, ECAs. Also it’s a good essay item on the challenges as well.

Lots of kids who apply to USMA switch schools during high school...and you have two years at your new school to meet the teachers and get great recommendations.
Best wishes in your new school!

Nope- military kids (whose parents are in military) switch high schools all the time! Keep taking your upper level classes and take advantage of some free SAT prep courses/practice tests on line
