My DS has received an appointment to USNA. His grades in the first quarter of 2nd semester senior year are worse than normal. Usually he has As and the occational B, but it looks like it is mostly Bs and less As. No Cs, Ds or Fs. Will this be a problem and count it result in rescinding appt because I have heard that a dropping in grades can be a problem?

He'll be fine. If it was Ds and Fs then I would be concerned.

EDIT: And it's only March. Tell him to get on it and get those grades up anyway. No slacking of senioritis for academy appointees. He'll need the foundational knowledge from this semester when he gets to the academy the next semester.

As @kinnem says, likely won’t impact DS’s offer of appointment. However, he’ll want momentum and foundation going into plebe year. For example, if he’s taking AP Calculus now, Calculus 1 at USNA is significantly tougher. If he’s taking AP English Composition now, English 1 at USNA is significantly tougher. And USNA’s classes, particularly in STEM, will build on the high-school foundation. So finishing high school strong will only give him confidence — not to mention knowledge — for the challenging plebe year ahead.

The occasional ebb and flow of grades is normal. USNA (and other schools as well) is concerned if someone who's been admitted appears to tank their final semester of h.s. IOW, "I'm in, so there's no reason to keep studying."

That said, fully agree that pushing through to the end (doing one's best) is important for many reasons.

It’s a challenge....Senioritis. Wasn’t sure if that was a medical update that DS needed to send in or not. Ultimately didn’t as it wasn’t diagnosed by a medical doctor. Only mom.

DS is in a similar situation, although no appointment yet. Waiting....

I see it as a good thing that AP Calc and AP Chemistry are kicking his butt. Like many of these talented young people, it always came easy to him. These classes are the real deal and it is his first taste of working hard and not getting a 98%. I think that is helpful for them to know that they are not infallible academically. The lessons learned through failure (or in this case just not an A) are valuable for life moving forward. As midshipmen, or college freshmen, nothing will come easy.

I think Calculus is the thing most “math students” get hit with. That was my first C on a test...
