Still in the game

Yes! We will be at the Crew Classic! We are with River City Rowing Club, who is she with? PM me and we can say hello!

I'm from SD, and when I was in college I used to work for Mission Bay Aquatic Center...we provided and captained all the boats for security, EMS, and others who needed to be on the water. Great memories, and even more grateful for the overtime pay as a student.

Good luck.

I have been looking to this thread for comfort and knowledge for weeks now and this is my first time saying anything but I am just too excited not to. My DS received his BFE today!

Congratulations! So happy for you!

Prepswimmom

I don't disagree with you that it is unfair.. as a matter of fact, I feel like the SA's should drop down and compete in Division 3 to take the emphasis off of sports.... but I don't run the SA's . I feel as you do... that the first priority should be that of becoming a Naval Officer. Some sports are given way too much emphasis and as such have created this problem.

I did not mean to start something here... I am just another mother trying to navigate the admissions waters with 4 kids.... like so many of you

DS TWE is dated 3/18 postmarked 3/20 and arrived in NH 3/24 . I have a question for others who received TWE's : do your letters have some numbers above the date and do you happen to know what they might mean? I am still praying for those waiting my this Saturday bring BFE to you all .

There's a letter included with the BFE that also has those numbers. It'd be nice to know what they represent. With how frequently this thread gets posted to only a moderator may see this question and be able to answer it.

As a parent who had DD recruited by many Div I schools and the only Div III school she considered attending was MIT, I respectfully say that perhaps you don't understand college athletics and possibly the athletic aspects of the military. The SAs have produced several Olympian caliber athletes. They need to compete at the Div I level. The military allows for some highly qualified members to train for their sport as their job. I do agree that there is too much emphasis (including coaching salaries) on things such as football, but then again look at all the Americans that spend hours watching the football and basketball and I believe that the cadets are required to attend the football games. DS is the one who will attend USNA next year and we hope that he does play a Div I sport!

Something to think about - if the SA recruites athletes who can't keep up academically then they may resort to cheating and when caught there will be 2 openings for their MOC the following year! We've heard of some cases of this at different SAs.

PLEASE stop bashing Athletes

I don't think athletes at SAs should be given a grade pass as they are at civilian schools - they should be held to the same high standard as all applicants.

I have been following this post from the beginning and have been routing and hoping for your son, as well as all the other candidates as I told you in a private message. I read daily to check in on all of you.

With a moniker of prepswimmom you obviously take pride in your child's sport, and may have actually spent the 13 years I did supporting, encouraging and comforting your child who worked their hardest in the pool. In addition to all the hard work to reach the national level in swimming our child also excelled in the classroom, ACT Scores, community service, as a Captain of 2 sports, national honor society officer, started a service club, and was a volunteer firefighter and is a hard working, terrific kid who wants and desires to serve her country. Do you have any idea what she went through to accomplish all of this?

PLEASE stop bashing athletes. It is unacceptable and offensive. Don't let one person's comments about a single athlete lead you to believe athletes are inadequate. Athletes have to take the same classes, pass the same CFT, and graduate like any other midshipman.

I have a DS who will be applying next year, who is not an athlete, and I promise I will not break one candidate down and build another up. LOA's are not just given to athletes, they are also given to stellar candidates. I can guarantee you, DS is not complaining about DD's Athletic LOA, he is doing everything in his ability to vie for his own LOA.

Every midshipman is equal day one, I now worry about the candidates who will
treat my child with negativity based on her being a varsity athlete.

Please treat all appointees with the same respect.

I wish you all the best of luck next year and with plans B, C, and D.

Dial the gate
He received an email Friday inviting him to a luncheon along with 2 other "offerees". I did not want him to get his hopes up so he called his BOG and she confirmed the Appointment. So we have been waiting for the BFE to make sure it is official. I don't think I have ever seen my DS so excited. He practically beams.

tri mom

I do understand college athletics as I played college athletics ( tennis) as did my husband ( xc/ track and field).

All I am trying to get across is that it might not seem fair to sometimes lower the standards but that is what they in fact do SOMETIMES .. not all the time.

My DS will be attending USNA and participating in Division 1 sports as well. He was also recruited by many division 3 schools as well as some division 1 schools so I have been through the process . My son politely declined all offers as he told the coaches he wanted to be an officer in the Navy.. and the schools he was recruited for did not have an on campus NROTC program.

There is a lot that is "not fair" in the admissions process but we are not sitting in the admissions offices of any of these schools and can't know what is going through their minds. We can only make the best decision with the facts at hand.

I'm not bashing the athletes and as a swim mom I know most swimmers are top students - it is just the nature of the sport. What I am frustrated with in General is the emphasis on sports in this country as a whole. It is not what is important in life by far.

The numbers are probably the number of the correspondence...meaning a form/publication/doc number. Just making an educated guess in that most correspondence from the armed services has a publication number.

Again, just guessing.

I am the mother of a DS that works very hard at a sport not recognized as a varsity sport. He spends hours and hours training and still keeps his grades up. He takes AP classes etc! I have the most respect for any child who uses the gifts that God has given him/her. We all have our talents whether it be academics, sports, art.... I have 4 children and each is uniquely gifted and I could not be more proud of any of them!!

I may have been misunderstood

I just wanted to point out when this whole conversation got going that I never meant to say that ALL athletes have lower standards... I said that SOMETIMES it does happen . It also happens in civilian schools. If you look at averages for the incoming classes you will see there is a range....

I am saying that if there are 2 identical candidates in so far as scores, ec leadership, grades, etc and one candidate happens to fill a void that the Naval Academy needs at that time to compete at division 1 level they most likely will take the athlete. To some this is unfair... I see both sides as I can see with my 4 children how both scenarios could work in the favor of my children . I have seen instances where a student from my DS high school could not get into a highly selective school with perfect scores but an athlete got in with the average scores for that school. Colleges as well as SA's are looking for an incoming class that will be diverse in MANY respects .
