The Gunsmith Thread

@THParent....

I'm trying your chant, but it's not working. Going to have to order myself a 44. I can tell my wife it's less than a 45.

Did you get one? The update on mine is that I bought 3 more mags for it (because I have a rule that all my semi-autos should have at least 5 mags).
I have also now put 500 rounds through it. Not a single failure to fire, feed, or eject. It's freakish, for a .22.

Not yet. Read up on some reviews and have it on my list, been watching prices and waiting for a good reason... If by this time next month my DS has a BFE, I might just pull the trigger and get one as a memento from the SA forums that helped cope with the long wait.

Well, I used to call them weapons, then as an NRA Instructor, I had to call them firearms. Now the NRA requires us to just call everything a "gun".

New NRA class actually called NRA Basic CCW. Early in the class, the training counselor assured a room full of NRA certified instructors it was not only okay to use the"w" word, since it's in the title of the course, he encouraged it.... BUT ONLY for teaching or talking about the CCW course. Any other time, proper nomenclature only. It's a firearm, gun, pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, etc.

lots of reports online of them failing pretty catastrophically. Like slides breaking in half.

I have heard of these reports, but have not personally seen the aftermath of a "ka-boom"(SCLID).
Do you have any links or photos?

I ask, because I find it a little hard to believe. SAAMI maximum pressure is 24,000psi for the cartridge case, but in actual practice, 40 grain lead round nose solids are not very hard (6- 10 on the Brinell scale), so the pressure on the bolt face should be much smaller (like 10,000 to 13,500 psi). Otherwise, the soft projectile would deform from the pressure, before it left the barrel.

I can't imagine low pressures like that, contributing to a SCLID.

My son and I were at the range awhile back and a "shooter" two lanes to our left was a fella who brought his shotgun to the range still in the box.He had enough sense I guess to actually read the paperwork but the idea that someone would not do that at home or have an experienced person with them is almost unbelievable.

I had a funny NIB story .... years ago, when I was a very junior Associate attorney in the office, I got a call from one of the older, somewhat taciturn, senior partners, asking me if I could come down to his office. He was a member of the firms management committee, and all I could think of what it was I had done wrong this time... I walk down to his office,, at least with the confidence that I have had my a$$ chewed by better men, and walk in to find him at his desk, with a Beretta 391 broken down in a lot of pieces, and him looking at it with a puzzled look. Somebody had told him that I had the same gun, so he asked me to put it back together for him.

I've picked up a few guns over the years as an attorney. I've had numerous estates where the family comes from the northeast or west coast for an estate in Virginia. They are generally terrified of guns and think they are committing a crime by looking at and touching a gun in Virginia. I'm glad to relieve them of their anxiety. I am surprised and disappointed by the number of Americans that have never owned a gun and are unfamiliar with gun laws and our constitution. My office is definitely a safe space.

I have never been a "Glock Guy", so how did this happen?

The one in the middle is the new Glock 44. It is incredibly efficient at digesting any brand of 40-gr. lead round nose solid .22LR.
I have a few hundred rounds though it with no malfunctions whatsoever. Not even a single misfire. It's sort of freakish.
Is that the foldable glock I see to the right?

Yes. That's a folding G19. I bought the frame and built the upper, more as a novelty than anything else. I cannot see Full Conceal staying in business, considering how pricey those things are. I'm hoping that it will be a collector's item someday.

Here is a video about it. It's kind of cringe-worthy, because this guy sweeps himself with the gun several times. Not what I would call "safe gun-handling skills". He also mentions several things that just make me roll my eyes.

I personally find the idea of carrying this thing folded up in my pocket to be laughable, but that's just me.

I like the look on the guy who made the automated gun cabinet. It was like "I know it's silly, but I made this because I can".

That is thinly-veiled suppressor humor, by the way. :)

Oh boy, if I show that to my DS and DH they will begin engineering and be in construction phase within a few days. They were just talking to Alexa last night about surround sound, it was pretty boring. This on the other hand ticks all of their boxes. I can see it getting expensive. Also, our son just went shopping for ammo, he and a friend are going shooting today. He learned first hand how crisis ramp up ammo consumption, limits on boxes and it took 4 stores before he got 308. Luckily, I have a friend who owns a shop, he is closed until noon but offered to meet our son at his shop and sold him the needed cartridges. Good friends to have, gunsmiths, butchers and bartenders.

The automated cabinet, beautifully made, with backlighting, reminded me of John Wick going to see the “sommelier” and picking out a few (!) choice items.
