"Turned Down"

Just checked my USNA portal today and saw this. I did not have a nomination for this school, but I didn't know what it looked like when you were rejected. I kinda wish I would have received an email from them saying that I was "turned down", but at least I know now.

Putting the information on the candidate's portal seems cold and impersonal - and probably is However, it is in response to the desire of candidates to have the information as quickly as possible so as to start on alternative plans.

Agree. Perhaps a letter is still forthcoming. But this saves a week, at least, of time for notification.

I find it interesting to read that people don’t like to know immediately, in this day and age of instant info, and complaints about ‘the wait’. This speeds things up tremendously as far as notice.

I just received the same thing. I had 3 noms, and what I thought was a strong application. I'll be back next year.
Similar scenario for me. We can only do what we can do. Let's get it next time!

I think having the results in the portal is ok. However, having just "turned down" seems cold. I feel they can have something a little better than that. Maybe "we regret to inform you that you were not selected at USNA for c/o 2026". I would rather know as soon as possible. Their wording sucks-even if they sent that in a letter.

Imma do NROTC and have the best life at my local university. Imma at least spend my summer like a civilian
While you’re living your best life at the local university, spend some time learning to say and write “I’m going to…” rather than “Imma…”

Yes, this is an anonymous online forum. But clear, compelling, mature use of the English language — both spoken and written — is an imperative for prospective officers.

I know for my son, USMMA used "Qualified - Not Selected" which at least made him feel good knowing he had what it takes to be qualified.

I'm in the same situation. I'm hoping that the reason I was "turned down" wasn't because my medical exam was "incomplete", even though I completed my DoDMERB exams in 2021!

Of course. I wouldn't write slang/informal in an English essay or to anyone older. I write informal because it helps me connect to people better.

My DS is a pretty average mid. If you wrote anything to him that casually and you were a plebe, you would be one sore, tired, and sorry person. Time to expunge that form of communication.

I'm not a plebe though :( I wish I was a plebe.

I know, and I'm sorry you didn't get the news you were desperately hoping for. Take the wise advice with a grain of salt, and a look to the future. Regardless of whether you reapply or not, you are now moving into the big leagues of Academia and it is a time to shift in terms of mindset in connecting with people. When you relax your communication style in one platform, it tends to creep into all, and mistakes will be made. That would not bode well for essays or email communications.

I teach high school and am always gently reminding my students that they need to communicate across all platforms as professionally as they can. Sometimes, sage members of the forum will point out grammatical errors, not to criticize or make a poster feel bad, but to guide them to a place where they will be more successful.

Hang in there, it's a yucky couple of days for you, and many others who worked hard, put in their best applications, and simply put, there are never enough available appointments for the number of qualified applicants.

Give yourself a little time, then pivot and focus on Plan B and bloom where you are planted. Good luck to you.

I would check to see if you have any remissions on the DODMERB website. I was perplexed by this as well, but then I checked the DODMERB website and I just had to submit a statement that I don't have acne. Got on the waitlist still hoping!
