TWE Is This For Real?

And lots of schools provide free room and board for ROTC students. Really nice benefit.

I may be able to offer you a sliver of hope.

Last year my DS applied to USMA, USNA, USAFA & USMMA. He got nominations to all four and was given a November offer of appointment to USMMA and a December offer of appointment to USMA, but received TWE's from USNA & USAFA. Then early the next year (late March - early May.....I can't remember exactly when) DS received a very unexpected (post-TWE) offer of appointment to USAFA.

We figure that the names of all 3-Q'd applicants (especially one's with a nomination) are kept on a shelf until the final deadline in May. I believe the proper terminology is "Qualified Alternate" or "Additional Appointee". So I'm suggesting that it's technically possible that the dreaded TWE won't be the last you hear from USMA for the Class of 2024. Let us hope that is so for your son.

That's exactly right! The National Waiting List (NWL) offers justifiable hope to a candidate as well qualified as Alliern"s DS.

Here's a post from kinnem yesterday on another thread (Two Nominations) that says it very well:

All folks who are 3Q with a nom go to the NWL if they are not appointed/charged to that slate.

Actually, a better way to think of it, in my mind, is all 3Q with a nom go on the NWL. If you receive an appointment you are removed from the NWL.
The top 150 folks on the NWL, after all MOCs are charged, are given appointments. It's the law. Then there are Presidential nom appointments, VP, Sup, and others taken from the NWL as the academy sees fit to round out the class. As a result several people on a MOC's slate could end up with appointments. It's a moving jigsaw puzzle that admissions puts together to get the class they want.

Editing: I think it is worth arriving late at school today to get some sort of answer. If he is getting a bad recommendation from one of his teachers--this will impact every college app. (For one of my boys we learned that the busy counselor was sending a letter of rec for my boy but with another boy's name on it...a college admissions rep told us--and we were able to go back and get it fixed.)

This!!! When my cadet was getting reference letters from his guidance counselor we found out the one she was sending listed every college he was applying to. My cadet had to ask her to stop and only list the school she was sending it to. Kind of blows my mind she hadn’t thought that could be seen as a negative. I’m sure she was just shortcutting her work with one form letter, but he let her know that USMA might not appreciate he might also apply to Navy or Air Force. Luckily it was caught after summer seminar applications and before actual applications.

Inexcusable by the guidance counselor, no doubt. However, we have heard multiple times through this process that there is no negative opinion toward a student applying to multiple SA's/ROTC/Civilian Colleges. For the type of motivated student that generally applies to SA's, it is perceived as the norm.
 
No SA staffer or leader is surprised about or disapproving of a candidate applying to multiple SAs. It’s quite common. SAs want motivated candidates, and mutually want the other SAs to get their fair share of them, and for the best fit possible of candidate/SA/Service. No issue at all there.
 
Here is the deal. If your kid, like my #3, altered his essays to describe his calling to that particular service and inspiring his life long dream to serve and lead...it does not help to know that he is doing the same thing for the other SAs. FULL STOP. (edited to note that #1 only applied to USMA and got in during the second week of September so did not apply anywhere else.)

Teachers and guidance counselors are busy people from different backgrounds and may have different sets of norms and beliefs. While we would like to trust the system, something like this deserves clarification. It is so early in the application cycle for someone with good stats.
So, my understanding is that the OP's son has not called directly. He should.
 
Update which isn't much at this point is: emailed Regional Commander on Monday evening and has received no response yet. Waiting on FFR to check into why the early rejection. DS emailed Colonel McDonald who is the Director of Admissions at West Point last night and received a response from someone in Admissions this morning telling him they would look into his file and get back to him. In the meantime, we are still hoping that this was some type of clerical error somewhere in the system.

So relieved for your family! What a mess! Sounds like some QC needs to be put in place. Glad it worked out and the light in back on to keep working!
