USAFA Waiting Thread C/O 2027

While visiting my son at USAFAPS this weekend, we started chatting with some doolies at a restaurant. To our surprise, we were told by them that they are down to 853.

I'm not sure where they get their information. My doolie had heard rumor of 940 before Christmas break, but nothing from an official source. Also if 853 is accurate, that's over 200 lost since I-day, and my doolie doesn't personally know any who have quit since the end of BCT (I think he knew of 2 or 3 quit who quit before ADay).

By November 2022 more than 150 left. So 230 does not sound that off. These three doolies did not doubt one second, it was clear that they had no doubt about the number. If the number is not correct, the three should be hired as actors 🤣🤣

I had heard under 1000 from my doolie. I'll have to ask him if there is an update. Either way, they have lost a lot. My class also lost quite a few but we started much larger than 2026. They will lost still more as cadets leave due to academic/physical boards. I wonder if their attrition will cause the next few classes to be a bit bigger.

Cough 7 cough from my squad all after basic . So there's that, all with valid reasons.

Why so many? I understand that the academy life is very hard, but this is approaching a 20% attrition rate. Has it always been like this or has something changed recently?

Thank you for asking. I'm wondering the same thing. Is something else happening besides the usual reasons?

I've heard that 15-20% by graduation is normal, so it definitely seems that 2026 is trending higher.

Covid kids 🤣🤣 I am just kidding but it may be a clue. Some kids that get in are not meant for the military lifestyle. They just want to party ALL DAY. Some, NOT ALL, are more interested in posting efing TIK TOK videos of themselves wearing the uniform than in math or PT. Do not believe me? Just Google search haha

My questions also. D has accepted for C/O 2027, so wondering if something is going on with C/O 2026. Even if there is a usual 15%-20% drop out rate by graduation, these numbers are occurring before the end of the first year.

Just random thoughts, could the school shut downs during covid have impacted the students' academic readiness? Even with the "free" tuition, is it getting harder to attract and retain kids who may not be committed to the military academy mindset? Are the physical demands too taxing and foreign to many college-aged kids?

Not judging anyone's decision wrt staying at USAFA; I don't know if I could get through four years myself. Just wonder what other people's thoughts are, especially now that my D will be a Doolie next year, and if I'm being honest, it is concerning as a parent to hear that so many have dropped out so early in the game.

We came in at 1,078 for I-day. Most classes come in at 1,200. So we've lost around 150ish which is normal for a class. Most end at around 980 give or take. However yeaaaa that's over 4 years verses not even one for us.

What changed with the Class of 2026 was the significantly reduced number of applicants (which has evidently rebounded somewhat this year). That means the Academy had a relatively much smaller pool to choose from for '26, and this could be one result of that -- lots of kids got appointment offers who wouldn't have in years past.

Higher class acceptance rate means a lot of the people who got in normally would not have. That's my theory at least
