USAFA Waiting Thread C/O 2027

I'm curious if there is any correlation between obtaining an AFROTC scholarship and an appointment to the academy? Meaning if you get one, will you likely get the other. This year there were 500 scholarships given out this year and it looks like about 1200 appointments. Makes me think that the ones getting the scholarships are likely to get an appointment too? Or do they know if they aren't getting an appointment and then put them on a scholarship list or something like that? They all end up at the same place 4 years from now, but I have friends from quite a few years ago that said they got both, so that just made me wonder.
I don't think so, I received a Type-1 this year and it's not looking like I will receive an appointment this year.

A couple of thoughts:

1. AFROTC is a national competition
2. USAFA has an additional roadblock in the nomination process.
3. While it makes sense that USAFA candidates also apply to ROTC, I imagine some (many?) ROTC applicants don't apply to USAFA.
4. They don't have the same criteria for choosing "winners."

With all that said, I agree that there is likely a correlation because of the caliber of candidates being chosen for both.

I suspect there is a correlation, and it's because 4-year, Type 1 AFROTC winners are extremely well qualified. So those who also applied to the AFA likely also have a better than average change of appointment due to their excellent qualifications, as demonstrated by having won the AFROTC scholarship. But correlation does not equal causation, so I doubt there is any kind of "link" between the two.
Thank you, my son got both the AFROTC and NROTC - MO scholarships, but has been waiting on an appointment from both academies. I just thought since he seems to be top of the heap with ROTC, that he'd have heard something from an academy by now. I guess I just need to be patient. He is sitting in DODMERB waiting on a waiver and everyone has requested one. He just got a request for more information on that last week, but it was triggered by accepting an AFROTC scholarship, as we need to keep the Plan B moving along. I don't think the medical items will be deal killers, just a waiting game on that. My son tells me I've been too optimistic, but I believe in him and the scholarships prove my point as do his 3 nominations. Just hard to think it would be this long in waiting... I was just hoping that getting the scholarships didn't mean he was passed by for the academies, but glad the two aren't "linked".

I don't have a crystal ball, but I'd encourage people not to get too pessimistic too quickly. While I don't think "most" appointments will come in April, I'm still expecting 40% of the appointments that aren't from USAFAPS to still be forthcoming. As a reminder, this was posted just a month ago from an admissions briefing:
Just got done doing the Discovery Tour at USAFA. Here is a snippet of current C/O 2027 admission. They said they expect most offers to come in April due to DODMERB slowdown.

Everything I've learned in this process suggests that the order in which appointments come out is highly random, and determined by a lot of behind the scenes processes. I don't believe the order in which they're offered has much to do with the applicant's WCS. There are likely 500-600 more appointments to go out, so keep the faith!
The Academies will not bypass a kid because he has ROTC scholarships, so no worries there!
The waiting is brutal, I know. Been through it 3 times now...Hang in there!
Wishing you the best!

The AFA website has a definition of regular candidates. It's people who find out in March. After that, it says

Late Selections

Some appointees do decline their appointment offers, and we select other qualified candidates to fill those vacancies. In such cases, we may not notify replacement candidates until shortly before the class enters.
I have been accepted to several non-SA universities and am waiting for an appointment from USAFA. My deadline for the universities to commit is May 1. So if I don't hear anything from USAFA by April 30th and I commit to a university what happens if I get an appointment later?

This is exactly right. My son is doing the same thing. Best of luck!

If you get an appointment later you can just reject your offer to your selected university to go to USAFA. The only downside is that you will be losing your $300-$500 deposit that you pay when you commit however minuscule compared to the cost savings you'll get by attending the academy which is free of tuition.

And to add to that, several on here have reported receiving their deposit back when they explain the situation to the university. Not a guarantee but doesn't hurt to ask.

It is always best to contact the school where you are depositing to make sure that this is acceptable. The deposit contracts vary between schools. Our son contacted three of his potential schools, and one of them agreed to be the “backup” if the USAFA appointment didn’t work out. There was a case on this forum several years ago where the university that had been deposited to went after the student for non-payment of the years tuition and housing since they had signed the contract by making the deposit. While rare, it is a consideration.

Unfortunately my DS has to make a decision on WestPoint Civil Prep appointment by April 10. If he declines WP, his plan B is accept AFROTC Type 1, 4 year and go to Texas A&M Corp of cadets. We really hope for something from USAFA this week. But our Pro's Con's list has really been about AF versus Army.

I really hope USAFA comes through for him in time. Still, I wouldn't feel terrible about backing out of the ROTC scholarship, if USAFA accepts him after you've committed to A&M. I'm sure they'll understand, and it's certainly happened there plenty of times previously.
Otherwise, congrats on Texas A&M! It's widely regarded as the best of the 6 Major Military Universities, and no doubt his experience there in the Corp of Cadets will be excellent in it's own right!
Also Congrats on the civil prep sponsorship with WP! Consider that the Army has Airborne as well? And West Point could lead to plenty of opportunities similar? Bell V-280 coming online seems exciting!

It's really unusual that it's taken so long this year. 2 days from now will be the day two years ago that I received my first of two rejection letters, but there's less than half the usual amount of appointments out so far. Very strange!

At this point, I'm just waiting to take the rejection so I can move forwards with Army ROTC with zero reservations. Originally, I started it just to boost my chances of appointment to USAFA, but I've come to really like it. For others in a similar position, it isn't the end of the world if you don't get in, and you're probably still very qualified and will do well no matter what commissioning source or branch you go through.

If I do receive a rejection, which is seeming more and more likely with each day, I just wonder what more I could've possibly done to get in.

No news isn't bad news yet. Stay positive. It ain't over.

Recieved appointment. District 10 and Pat Toomey nominations. I am unsure which nomination source I received the appointment through.

Did you ever find out who you received the appointment from? I am also in PA-10 & received a USAFA nomination from Rep Perry On 3/29 my DoDMERB went from pending waiver review to under DoDMERB review Seeing that you received your nomination on 3/20 & a week later I saw some action on DoDMERB has hope of hearing something soon. However if you got the acceptance through PA-10 or Sen. Toomey, I would know more. Thanks.

According to AFrpaso's graph of self-reported appointments, the current pace of self-reported appointments ranges from 2.5 weeks to a full month behind the self-reported appointments for the last four years.

Thanks! That’s just the kind of stuff I needed. Lol
