USNA 2025 Waiting and....Waiting

Just out of curiosity - how many other people are just waiting for medical waiver decision (like my DS)?
My DS is also just waiting for a medical waiver. We're hoping for an answer soon, but know it could be awhile! It appears that the April 15 (now April 30) target is for admission decisions, but we haven't seen any similar guidelines for medical waivers. My DS is handling the wait with more patience than I am!

I was just wondering, if you need a medical waiver and it is currently "under review", by what date do you need to have it done by (ei waiver granted) in order to still qualify for the class of 2025

I think it can be pretty late (May) - as long as you are prompt in completing your responsibilities - scheduling and getting to any needed appointments.

My DS is much more patient about the wait than I am also! It is agonizing.

You will only be competitive for a waiver once you have received a LOA from the academy, that is when you are deemed "competitive" for waiver review.

Basically the process is 1. Become appointed 2. Push for waiver 3. Waiver clears 4. Officially appointed by both DOD and USNA --> you cannot do anything with a waiver unless you already have received a LOA for academy

If SA deems you competitive, the SA will start the waiver process with or without an LOA. You cannot "push" for a waiver. If you receive a waiver, you can be offered an appointment without an LOA.

Do you mean a Letter of Assurance (not Appointment) or a Conditional Appointment, which are very close in nature and essentially accomplish the same thing. The Conditional actually makes the offer, on condition everything is satisfactorily met.

It’s minutiae, but we don’t want the 2026ers reading this to think they have to get an LOA from the get-go or they are dead in the water.

I read the initial question of who else is waiting only for a medical waiver to be directed to those who already have an admission decision, which I guess could be either an LOA or conditional appointment. That's the boat my DS is in, waiting only for the waiver. Well, waiting for the waiver and subsequent appointment. :) It's hard to be patient.

Anyone else planning on popping on the live chat tomorrow am with admissions? I don't anticipate any major updates but I am curious how often the board is meeting and how many additional appointments they have to award? One more day of staying alive...

Ah this makes sense, I was under the assumption that in order for myself to get a waiver, I needed to receive a LOA to be deemed competitive.

Also my by understanding is that one cannot get a waiver before receiving the "competitive" status by USNA

A LOA is absolutely not necessary to be deemed competitive. 2026ers and future classes, don’t worry and stress over LOAs they are not the end goal!! Frankly, all the ‘25 friends I have already made did not receive LOAs and literally nobody has asked or even cared if one of us had a LOA since we’re all going to the same place.

Good morning everyone! It’s another day and honestly, I really appreciate everyone on this thread for being not only informative and helpful but also so uplifting. Whether I get offered an appointment or not I will be extremely grateful for the opportunity of just being able to go through this process. Fingers crossed for good news today! Have a good day everyone!

That sounds like a good idea. Could you tell me what time and what the link is for the live chat? My DS is in school during the day and can't attend, but I'd be interested in what they're saying. (I looked at the admission site and didn't immediately see the chat info, and I wasn't sure whether it would be there or on FB.) Thank you!

If by LOA you mean “letter of assurance,” this post is not accurate!

One can be deemed competitive and/or have a waiver requested without an LOA. An LOA is a conditional offer that guarantees appointment once the recipient fulfills some aspect of the application. That could be one of the 3 Qs (academics, medical, CFA) or some other fairly mundane or strange request (the case for my DD).

There have been a lot of posts lately stating something akin to the above excerpt, i.e. that an LOA is necessary to be deemed competitive and/or receive a medical waiver. Either the long-standing definition of LOA has mysteriously changed. Or a new term has been introduced that resembles a current one. Or folks are confused or misled. Or people are making things up, whether intentionally or not. Weird.
