What’s with some plebes wearing multiple name tags? Seen in recent plebe summer photos for class of 2023.

It's a form of "training." As in, "You didn't do something right, so you need more training." For example, that plebe might have applied their name tag inappropriately.

Couple of reasons..
1. Just forgot to put it on, so now you get to wear 2 or 3. Some in DS company had 4 last year.
2. Put on the wrong side, upside down...etc...
3. Plebe caught 'rigging'--having your clothes (white works usually) pre-prepared with name tag or even worn prior to detailers wake-up.

All very company specific. Some companies seem to have everyone with multiple name tags and others with none.
By PPW they all seem to back to wearing just one.

FWIW, In the last couple of weeks before my son graduated, he wore one of my nametags in place of his own and at first, just a few folks caught the numeric difference. After a week or so, he started wearing both his and mine but again, it really was not noticed very much.

We renamed a Plebe Beat Army during PS. New name tag and door plate too. We had convinced he had a new name so much so that when we took them to get their military IDs he filled it out with Beat Army as his name. The lovely ladies working in the ID office were dying laughing and came out to my buddy and I (detailers) and asked... ‘We are pretty sure this isn’t their real name?’

Name tags can be a variety of things as mentioned. Forgot it one day, find another and wear two... do it again, wear 4... makes you work with your classmates, attention to detail and honestly it gets funny too. PS is funny as heck... the Plebes don’t think that right now, but eventually they will.

It also introduces them to the military habit of checking others’ uniforms and letting them know if a ribbon rack isn’t level, something is missing, a thread is coming out of a button and needs snipping. Attention to detail.

I have all my name tags from OCS (Foxtrot Company!) to last assignment, most with the little unit emblem affixed. There are also the “Angel of Death” and “Attila the Hunnette” nametags, with those sea stories locked away in the archives. [emoji16]

My son had to wear two tags the first week of PS. It was a simple goof up that caused the punishment, but still a goof up. He laughed about it on the phone call. Obviously I can't say my last name, so we'll just say it is "Brewmeist." Detailers and even a few officers walked by all week and and would say, "Hello, Mr. Brewmeist Brewmeist" just to rub it in.

Capt MJ has some skeletons in her seabags :D

Absolutely ! Keep in mind the detailers are young, and just went through Plebe Summer themselves a few years before. They have a serious job to do, but sometimes a little humor and silliness is quite effective in getting that job done. The truth is, 38 years later, we remember and talk about the funny things that happened during Plebe Summer more than you we remember the grind !

By the end of plebe summer last year DS was affectionately known as "thunder thunder thunder"

sometimes the entire company gets "training"(punished) to teach them to help remind each other

DS says that if you get (earn) to wear 4 name tags you are an Admiral. As a detailer they were trying to get the name tag folks to issue name tags that said Admiral so-and s0.........

DS had to wear 2 for a couple of days because he was getting up 15 min before morning “wake-up call” and showering/saving.

Darn! I think the most I saw on DD, via online photos, was three. Just a captain, I guess. Sigh.

I'm not sure these are indicators of rank so much as level of "special attention" that should be given for some infraction. Totally a guess on my part based on zero information or knowledge.

Getting up earlier than he should, BTW, was NOT a good thing. His detailer said he was gaming the system. DS said multiple name tags are not what you want.

Multiple tags are never a good thing. Getting up earlier than the rules also not good. During Plebe Summer we were constantly reminded that Captain Crunch our ranked us. This included us being required to have a box in all our rooms on the desk and requesting permission to do things from a box... of cereal...

While Waldo hunting, I saw that my DS was on double name-tag duty. During the phone call, he said that his tag was slightly off angle and was given a few days of double tags. I let him know that I was much less concerned with the punishment than I was with how he "accepted" the punishment.

^ Now that's funny ! See, Detailers have a sense of humor, and Plebe summer is all fun and games. Think about, Plebes get to go sailing, swimming, out to the rifle range, it's a lot like summer camp !
