USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

Yes -- that is correct - it is a dinner for one of the Alumni Association.

He is fully qualified for all the other parts for both portals - been that way since Sept. 1.

My point was that he keeps getting warm and fuzzy "signals" from Navy - Summer Seminar, invite to CVW, invite to this dinner - which all point in a good direction. But there are also 3 others from his small school applying to Navy (with different MOCs) and they are all strong candidates as well. His Blue Gold Officer also told him there were 12 really good candidates from the schools he covers, whereas last year he had 0 from those schools.

So the thinking was "bird in the hand" - it is better to get the NOM for the school you have the LOA from then to get a NOM for a school you may get rejected from. That was all based on this understanding that the MOC only gives one nomination to each service academy. But now there is this business about slates. Its all a little confusing.

The thing is coming through is to be very patient. Easier said than done!
To piggy back on my friend's post - real life example from my MOC nom panel tonight.

Candidate had LOA from WP. Nothing from USNA. Ranked WP 1 and USNA 2 on the MOC nom application. Told our panel tonight that they already received a senatorial nom and had WP appointment in hand. But truly wanted to go to USNA and only ranked WP #1 on the MOC app because they had received the LOA. Basically asked us not to give them nom to WP but please to do so for USNA so they had a shot there as well.

I'm doubly confused as to why T-37IP's son would need a MOC nom if he's already appointed?
My DD had two nomination sources (MOC and Senatorial) in the last cycle and still recieved a TWE. She applied for every nomination she was elidgible for because she knew that it gave the USNA more ways to possibly accept her and her peers applying with her. You have no idea how many slots are open for each MOC or Senator in any given cycle... same for the presidential nomination.

Hi! I am new here. I join this forum to try to find answers and after reading so many comments yours in particular gave me hope and the strength to keep cheering up my son. He is applying to USNA ‘27 is his #1 choice from his heart from a very young age wants to go to the Naval Academy. He had done his application early after so much hard work he had everything in with 2 Nominations, one from MOC and the second one from his NJROTC school. In the Portal still show Complete - Pending Review for the past month in a half. He went Summer Seminar and We just went for CVW.
I was very impressed by their campus is Magnificent. Right now we are in the waiting game holding the fort! Any advice anyone will be well appreciated.
Honest to goodness it is a really long waiting game. We constantly reminded our DD that God had a plan for her even if we did not know it. We are both civilian and had know idea how hard the process would be. Each step she took grew her as a person and it was the best process ever. Our district did not hear till the week of April 15th. We also reminded her the odds regularly, by the time you come to the CPR with Noms stage there are no bad candidates. I worried more than she did... She executed back up plans, applied for scholarships, ran a charity event and did homework. Remind him it is his senior year... it is only once.

Son had an LOA to the USNA in November of his first application cycle. He was also applying to the USAFA. He told all of his nom interview panels that he had the LOA, and was highly motivated to attend. But he had USAFA as #1 on one request, and USNA as #1 on the others.

Our House Rep. gave him a nom to the USAFA and one to the USMA (which he had as his #3 originally, but never applied and forgot to remove it from the request list). The Senators gave him nothing but a congratulatory letter indicating that the MoC had given him noms to the other two SAs.

Even with an LOA in hand, he still didn't get the USNA nom. Fast forward to late April of that selection year, and the Academy was unable to find him a nom. We reached out to our representative's offices again and explained that he just needed a nom source. Got a big, "Sorry, try again," from them. Come May of that cycle - "Thanks for applying, here's your TWE."

And that was right after getting the "Thanks for applying, here's your TWE," from the USAFA. Was a rough few weeks for my kid.

I remember!!

And also, what a blessing his year in NROTC was.

It all worked out. Your sons story is such a great example, of so many different things!! He landed where he was meant to be.

Just for the general readership new to the nom universe, unlimited Presidential and service-connected nominations are available. All who are eligible and apply, get them. But - only 20 appointments in each class can be charged to the Presidential nomination authority. There are some appointment limits on others in this category too. DoD SAs only, not USMMA.
Is there data available that tells us how many presidential noms are issued and how many get appointments?

If you look at the “Nominating Categories” part of this page you will note how many were from each nominating area in Class of 2026 at USNA. I do not know of a source for total nominations given for “Presidential.”

I read it as 632 total presidential nominations given. I assume 20 were charged to presidential nom source. I wonder how many of the 632 were inducted.

I think that you mistyped "100" as "20" here. Twenty is the number for ROTC appointments.

Hmm, well, I would say that the waiting will continue for most candidates until the first wave (small) comes out in mid-January. My DS received his appointment on 15 January, prior appointment threads reflect this first wave. Then, they just keep coming in dribs and drabs with another large one in early March. Every year can be different, but you do see trends in the appointment threads from year to year.

I will say this, stepping away from the candidate portal, spending time with friends and family, cleaning out a bedroom, and doing PT, all of those are things that should be a priority.

If you are the candidate, time will fly and whether you receive an appointment or activate Plan B, it is likely you won't live at home full-time anytime soon-- if ever. That is huge. DS did express in his letters home from plebe summer that he wished he had spent more quality time with the family prior to his departure.

If you are mom, dad, siblings, etc... your world is going to change, too. Spending time with your DS/DD is so key. Make some memories before they leave the nest. Doesn't have to be expensive or long-distance travel. DS wanted his favorite meals, he wanted to smoke brisket with dad, go to dinner with his big sister, and go on walks and bird-watching treks with me. Those memories are precious and will hold you over during tough times.

Sorry, that's probably more than you wanted to hear. I must be missing DS and feeling nostalgic.

Me too. Watching him return to the Academy last Sunday morning was rough.
Mine spent Thanksgiving with his incredible adopted sponsor family. Coming home isn't really doable on the short Thanksgiving weekend. Christmas break is just around the corner and the hugs that come with it.

Just what I needed to hear, thank you. As the parent of a hopeful the standby and wait phase has me flexing my patience skills. Although I’m enjoying the flurry of Coast Guard appointments, exciting times!

Sounds like a few mids-to-be could be celebrating appointments around the same time of your reunion with you DS. Cheers to December.

Howdy from Texas❣️My DD’s journey sounds similar to your sons. Her first nomination just post to her portal today, she all attended Summer Seminar where she was awardees the Outstanding Candidate Award. We are anxiously awaiting an appointment. However, we called USNA and they were having issues with the Dodmerb portal. So her medical is still not showing complete. Hoping it doesn’t further delay the process. In the meantime she was just awarded the NROTC Scholarship and will use that at A&M as her plan C.

My daughter’s interview with our congressman’s nomination panel was yesterday. She was told half of the usual number of nomination applications were received this cycle in our district. Would be interesting to know if our senators are also receiving fewer applications and if it holds true across many states.
Our daughter’s was on 11/12 aswell in Texas

Howdy, greetings from Texas. Our DD received an invitation to the USNA Dinner on 12/21/22 a couple of weeks ago, then had one of her interviews for her nomination and coincidentally received her first nomination today for USNA. She has attended USNA Summer Stem since 8th grade, this summer she attended Summer Seminar, passed her CGA with flying colors, and she was awarded most Outstanding Candidate while she was as Summer Seminar.,So we are really hoping that she gets an appointment soon. However, I’ve understood there is a problem it’s the Dodmerb site that is delaying things for everyone? In the meantime she just got awarded her NROTC Full Ride Scholarship that she plans on taking to A&M Corp of Cadets as her plan C. Best of luck to everyone

Congrats to all that have received nominations. And good luck to those hopefuls for a nomination. Something to keep in mind: Your friends, relatives, and some educators, when hearing that you received a nomination, might think: “John/Jane has been accepted to the Naval Academy!” They are most happy for you but are misinformed. Let them know the nomination is just one step in a long process. The appointment offer is the goal. The suspense will only continue to grow into 2023. Try and keep an “even keel” while you wait and speculate. Good luck!

My LOA showed up in my portal on Thanksgiving. I’ve heard conflicting advice about letting MOC offices know about the LOA — what do you all think?

The MOC nomination decisions will come out in mid December. I have a nomination from NJROTC but I’m from NOVA and want to have the best shot at an appointment since this is a competitive district. My plan B, C, etc. is ROTC (I found out about the Navy scholarship today :) and have AF and Army from the previous boards). Thanks!
