USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

Wished I had read your post before our interview. Struggled with “should we flex the LOA” thing or not. Landed on doing it opportunistically and the opportunity didn’t present itself. Meanwhile, we wait for dodmerbs…...
If you did receive an LOA there is nothing wrong with sending a polite email to your MOC advising them of it.

What are at the chances of a student getting an appointment without a MoC nomination? She has JROTC and Presidential nominations. At her MoC interview a week and a half ago, the panel seemed impressed with my daughter. She felt good leaving the MoC's office. However, at the end of the interview the panel had asked her if she already received a Presidential nomination. She replied 'yes'. Today, she was emailed that she was not selected for a nomination. "The only reason you were not selected is because you indicated you received a presidential nomination."

That's unfortunate-presidential Nominations are automatic for those that qualify. For the MOC board I sit on...we dont ask if they have another nomination. We only ask what other SA's are they applying to.

She has JROTC and Presidential nominations.
A nom is a nom is a nom. You only need one. Most candidates with a nom have only one. She has two. That’ll work. All noms are created equal, so nothing to be gained by who the source is.

She’s better off than applicants who have 1 or none. Presumably, she has applied for VP as well.

She will compete in the Presidential “nom bucket.” 100 appointments in the class can be charged to this nom source. Her competition will be all other fully qualified applicants who have the Presidential nom, which is simple eligibility. There could be several hundred with the Presidential nom; no way to know, so spend no time on it.

JROTC/ROTC “nom bucket”: 20 appointments per class can be charged to this nom source. Similar to Presidential, no way to know how many fully qualified applicants have this nom.

VP: My impression is these are carefully managed by the SA (no actual VP staff involvement) to use for someone they want but who has no nom or missed the cut for another nom.

If she’s put her best application in and is tending her alternate plans, that’s all she can do at this point. Many are appointed with no Sen/Rep nom.

Thank you. She has plans B and C and maybe D.

DS received his nomination yesterday and is showing in his portal. All his file is completed, and he has a LOA. He wants to celebrate with our family (we are a huge family) this weekend, but I want him to wait until his appointment shows up. Is it safe to open the bubbly during the football game this weekend or better to wait? I don’t want to jinx it!

Following as DS is in the exact situation. Nomination showed yesterday, LOA and all else complete. Go Navy! ;-)

He should wait. He can certainly limber up for a full celebration.

Timing it with Army Navy game would be pretty cool. Our state MOCs seem to be a bit later than other states in the nomination process. Daughter has one more interview with MOC. Just waiting for that last check box.

Yes a nom is a nom, but no, they aren’t all equal. Non-MOC noms are disadvantaged when it comes to selecting from the national pool. For example, (1) the first 150 in order from MOC noms ONLY and then (2) the remainder appointments is on a 3/4 (MOC) to 1/4 (non-MOC…i.e. Presidential, NROTC/JROTC). Please see Title X USC.

Ugh, daughter called from school to vent. She received an email from one our Senators. Email subject line was: Senator X's Nomination Decision. She rushes out of class to read it privately. Body of email reads: We are notifying you to let you know Senator X's decision will occur by January 15.

Aw, that's frustrating. It's a roller coaster ride over here, too. They pour so much of themselves into these nom apps and interviews, it's hard to see the process dragged out. Happy to hear you have a date for notification, at least for this source. If the nom applicants had a date and possibly knew the mode of communication they'd be receiving, or even knew whether or not they'd receive communication of a yes and/or no, it might ease the tensions, just a tad. But, I hear the process is character building, so we on we go!
