To piggy back on my friend's post - real life example from my MOC nom panel tonight.Yes -- that is correct - it is a dinner for one of the Alumni Association.
He is fully qualified for all the other parts for both portals - been that way since Sept. 1.
My point was that he keeps getting warm and fuzzy "signals" from Navy - Summer Seminar, invite to CVW, invite to this dinner - which all point in a good direction. But there are also 3 others from his small school applying to Navy (with different MOCs) and they are all strong candidates as well. His Blue Gold Officer also told him there were 12 really good candidates from the schools he covers, whereas last year he had 0 from those schools.
So the thinking was "bird in the hand" - it is better to get the NOM for the school you have the LOA from then to get a NOM for a school you may get rejected from. That was all based on this understanding that the MOC only gives one nomination to each service academy. But now there is this business about slates. Its all a little confusing.
The thing is coming through is to be very patient. Easier said than done!
Candidate had LOA from WP. Nothing from USNA. Ranked WP 1 and USNA 2 on the MOC nom application. Told our panel tonight that they already received a senatorial nom and had WP appointment in hand. But truly wanted to go to USNA and only ranked WP #1 on the MOC app because they had received the LOA. Basically asked us not to give them nom to WP but please to do so for USNA so they had a shot there as well.
