USNA Class of 2027 Waitlist: Team Hopeful

I just checked last year's thread. My kid came off on May 5th. Waitlisted on 4/15. Sounds as if that first week of May has been consistent over the years for when they start to pull people.

So, you've got 3 weeks more to go before more anxiety kicks in! :eek2:

I was just reading that thread myself -- so much of the same emotion we all have but it gave me a lot of joy reading the happy news which seemed to start a few days into May and continued all month. Here's to this May and what it will hopefully bring!

The USNA 2026 appointed list shows waitlisters that were offered full appointments . There were also candidates who were waitlisted who received Foundation offers that weren’t posted. Last year quite a few waitlisters received Foundation offers and it’s an amazing program . DD says she feels much more confident after spending a year prepping at Foundation .

I just realized this morning that I don't actually understand what Foundations is. Does she attend a regular college with specific curriculum?

The USNA Alumni Foundation, gives scholarships to candidates to 16 schools they have contracts with. Candidates go to the schools and emulate the NAPS Plebe curriculum for 10 months. Some are military academies and others are pure Prep schools. I am not sure if one has to resubmit the USNA application (NAPSTERS do not), but like NAPS they have to apply for nominations again. Bust the books (good grades), keep out of trouble and it should be a golden ticket to class of 2028. Both NAPS and Foundation offers mean the Academy wants you, just that you need a little preparation.

See:

The USNA Alumni Assn provides scholarships to partner civilian prep schools, using a list of names provided to them by Admissions. If the candidate successfully completes the prep school and is otherwise qualified with a nom, and reapplies, they are pretty much guaranteed an appointment. Golden Ticket, similar to NAPS.

Naval Foundation will notify a candidate and offer a scholarship to a Naval Foundation partner school . This can be a military prep school or a boarding school, it’s the candidates choice . The parents will contribute to the tuition but it’s very reasonable . They will take a plebe academic schedule , so Physics, Calculus and Chemistry . They have to pass the PRT , they don’t take the CFA again . They do have to obtain nominations again but Naval Foundation will reach out to the congressional rep and identify the candidate as Naval Foundation sponsored candidate . As long as the candidate succeeds academically, doesn’t get injured ( DD was told by Navy to wrap herself in bubble wrap for the year ), passes PRT and no disciplinary or other issues , they receive an appointment to USNA . I do know that there is a current chat group for foundation students that DD is in and there are at least 60 kids in it . I also am not sure how they decide who gets chosen for Foundation , there are students whose academic stats were amazing , yet they are in Foundation .

Take a look at Class of 2026 incoming profile, and you can see NAPS and Foundation Scholars numbers.

One interesting difference in the PRT is that the run is 1.5 miles vs 1.0 miles for the CFA. Planks instead of situps, and then pushups. No shuttle run, no pullups, no basketball throw. The extra 1/2 mile will be a shock to some.

For NAPS and Foundation, they do not “reapply” in the same sense or detail, as they are already in the chute.

Does anyone know if it is better to be on the USNA waitlist or the NAPS waitlist? I was feeling proud of myself yesterday, but now I’m worried that my chances are much lower and NAPS waitlisted have a better shot than I do…

Don't get in your own head. You should be VERY proud of yourself.

I have a problem. As a freshman in college and will start my second year of college in August (provided I get turned down), I need to start planning to get a lease for an apartment. I have 2 great friends here and we want to live together but I don't want to get myself in to something that is hard to get out of or makes my friends lives harder if I get into USNA. I also don't want to wait until I may get turned down in mid-May or as late as June to sign a lease that would have to start in July as that could be expensive or even impossible depending on the market at that time. I know that getting accepted off the waitlist is a small chance but there is still a chance and it makes it really hard to plan ahead. Any advice?

Can you pass on housing with friends for sophomore year and sign-up for on campus student housing? If you get an appointment and leave the school they can’t keep you locked into a housing contract, as you won’t be a student at the university.

Yes that is possible and another option I am considering. Obviously it's not ideal but something I might have to do. Thank you for that info.
