USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Hmm, our 2027 plebe got an electronic letter and a mailed letter in a blue presentation folder. Now to search for a glass case. ;)

Never too early to start your Navy retail habit:

As always the Captain ready with an answer. Thanks!

My application status has been just saying "Pending" (Not Complete Pending Review"), despite that I received nominations, did medical, and all of the steps in "My Progress" has a check mark. Should I be concerned? This might be the wrong thread to post.

Should you be concerned? Not really. Pending just means you are waiting on someone or something for a decision on your file. You’ll encounter that word a couple more times in your lifetime and then maybe you'll have reason to be concerned. Your credit card or loan application is pending... Your job application is pending... For naval officers promotions are “pending”. Pending senate confirmation. Waiting is tough. Don’t read anything more into it other than a decision has not yet been made. All pending “stuff” eventually resolves. Good luck to you.

I received an LOA this morning stating probably the same thing as all LOAS: "You have been selected for the class of 2028, as long as blah blah blah." I still need a medical waiver. Still waiting to hear back. Should I just sit tight? BGO told me I have the spot, so I can relax and focus on getting a waiver.

Does this mean that out of the people on my district's slate, I got the spot (there was only one spot at the academy this year), or can someone on my slate take my spot before I hear back about the medical waiver?

Also, I wanted advice on what to do about a situation. Two of the people on my slate are classmates of mine, and, to be honest, have been quite rude to me throughout this process and kind of laughing at me for applying and just all sorts of passive agressive comments. I have chosen to just be nice and brush it off and hope one day, an appointment will do the talking. My friends think I owe it to them to tell them that I got in, so that they can start planning for their backup options. I do not want to do this because I do not have an appointment yet. Also, it would definitely come off as braggy and douchey. There has to be a way for them to know that they should start planning for backups without me having to tell them face-to-face where it looks like I am bragging. I want to 100% be taking the high road in all of this and do not want to come off as condescending at all.

Needless to say, my interview with the BGO ended up going very well, and he told me he wrote me a stellar report and vouched to the Regional Commander about me for a waiver and probably put in a good word for me.

This is mostly just a place to vent the situation, but to anyone out there who is experiencing a similar situation, you can never be sure who is going to get an appointment. I had a 1430 SAT, which is probably low for my slate, but I was also an Ironman triathlete and worked my ass off on every other aspect of the application. If anyone ever tries to make snide remarks and belittle you, just know they will get what is coming to them. Somehow, the Navy knew she wasn't made for the academy. If you are experiencing the same situation, have faith that things will work out and remain calm and polite NO MATTER WHAT THE PERSON SAYS. They will always look silly in the end. You reap what you sew. If that person ends up getting an appointment over you, know that they will get what is coming to them and have pride that you stayed true to yourself. Reapply the following year, and the Navy will not make the same mistake.

You got an LOA after they knew you were Dq’d. Your BGO told you to relax. And you are asking us if you should sit tight?

What other option do you have? If you don’t sit tight, what could or would you do?

Was your BGO interview before or after your DQ?

Nothing you can do but sit tight. Fingers crossed a waiver occurs. No need to tell your classmates. Let the results talk for you. Besides until the waiver is granted, nothing to talk about. Also, just because you got an LOA and hopefully a future appointment, doesn’t mean your classmates can’t get an appointment as well. You may end up being classmates at USNA.

Side note: I remember asking one of them what academies they applied to, and she said, "Just Navy." I said, "Yeah, Navy is probably my number one right now, but I applied to West Point and Air Force because I would have no problem going to any of the three. They are pretty great, Coast Guard too." She said, "Army is weird, and Air Force is barely an academy." I have two USAFA grad brothers, so this was slightly offensive, but I ignored it. She then went on to say, "Yeah, it is probably good you applied to other academies because my uncle went to USNA, and I know the BGO." All I said was, "Oh nice, I just turned in my apps and am just hoping for the best; good luck."

Needless to say, my interview with the BGO that she "knew" ended up going very well, and he told me he wrote me a stellar report and vouched to the Regional Commander about me for a waiver and probably put in a good word for me.

Congrats on the LOA.

Humbleness will get your farther in life than hubris, always.

As stated , just bc you are appointed from a slate does not mean others CAN’T be. At the very least, there are appointments off the NWL. So don’t feel the need to ‘let them know so they can move on’. It’s not over for ANYONE until word from USNA. And EVERYONE should ALWAYS have a backup plan. Even you. Im sure you have read that on the forums.

Your BGO has no effect on any medical piece. They shouldn’t even be talking to you about medicinal, other than ‘DODMERB generalities’. So don’t rely on any BGO influence in a medical LOA situation. You should still have backup plans, yourself.

If you receive the waiver and appointment, you can tell you friends that you didn’t tell them bc they are still in the running until they are told by USNA that they aren’t. Your assumption that they aren’t is incorrect. So no need to feel the need to share with them.

It’ll be a sweet post if you do! Some people wait for the blue folder, throw up a picture of you holding it, and announce. I hope that happens for you! Congrats on the LOA.

An add: no one know the puzzle piece that usna is using to build the class. One year you may hold the resume/WCS needed and another year, you may not. There are geographical, diversity, other elements to a class build. So, an assumption by your classmates that ‘you won’t make it’ is ignorant. They have no clue (nor does anyone) the class that’s being built, and the puzzle pieces needed, each year.

For all those waiting....seek out your local USNA Parents club for upcoming activities. Parents clubs tend to have picnics, Plebe send offs, and Firstie recognitions in May and June. You can find links to most Parents Clubs here:

Note that the Parents club are not given access to Plebes to Be lists. You must volunteer that information to be included.

Generally agree what has been said above, with a caveat that none of you have appointments yet, which means all of you should still be pursuing Plans B+. Even if you got an appointment, that doesn’t change their status and the same is vice versa, if the other(s) were to get an appointment while you still have an LOA, that shouldn’t change your pursuit of alternate plans. Im not sure anything needs to be said…period.

I will add as a side note/cheap advice (cheap, because you don’t have to pay for it)…be careful how and to who you vent. Nothing wrong with venting…I think we all do it. However, do you know for sure your classmates aren’t lurking on this forum or might find SAF later on? The details in your side note paragraph get somewhat specific and paint your classmates in a fairly negative light (not sure that information was needed to help you answer your advice question). As you get closer to an appointment and if/when you were to get to USNA…you are going to find a lot of things to vent about (trust me and any other alumni/MIDN)…some of it you might want to be careful who you vent to because it has a way to come full circle and bite you in the rear or make situations worse/awkward. At your young age and because USNA is a leadership laboratory, folks will make mistakes, say or do things you don’t agree with, make unpopular decisions, etc. it’s easy to make things personal and gossipy, but sometimes things are done in error, accident, or might be a learning experience, and if things come full circle back to you after it might have not been done with ill-will, it might make you feel bad/guilty. Not saying that this is fully applicable in this situation, because I (or other forum members) certainly don’t know you or your classmates well…but something to think about. It’ll also be similar out in the regular military (and life for that matter). In my experience, there always seems to be three sides to most stories.

What I can tell you, is you can never typically go wrong by taking the high road and being humble. I think it is good that your thought process seems to go in this direction.
Hopefully your medical waiver gets cleared up so the LOA can turn into an appointment.
