USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

What is the likelihood that appointments are going out, but aren't reflected on the forums? I know of one appointment that was offered to USNA last week that may not be listed on the self-appointment list.

The likelihood is very high. They are coming out every week. We haven’t seen the mass updates we have in the past, but we will. I get updates from my AC each week. The machine is moving. This board is only a small % of those applying.

I'm guilty of doing the same thing as everyone else on here. I'm anxious for those waiting to hear of an appointment. I see some getting down in the dumps as if the process isn't working, when in fact it's probably working as it always has. Hang in there gang.

I’m an active duty marine at CL and applicant to the academy. I have everything done, nominations in check and am simply awaiting a response. Are there any active duty sailors or marines that have received their appointment. My command has listed me as a no go for an operation on our upcoming deployment due to my application to the academy seeing as there’s a chance I won’t be there. I’ve reached out respectfully thru my chain of command to the academy and have not heard back. I would feel terrible if I didn’t receive an appointment and didn’t get to be with my guys for half the deployment after doing a full work up

Can't offer any perspective, but would be curious to know how many AD sailors and Marines get a nom and good to go from their command and don't eventually get an appointment or selected for NAPS. Is a MARADMIN released showing who was selected? I know they do this for MECEP, but can't recall seeing one for USNA. I know everyone rambles on about not going enlisted if you don't get selected out of HS, but honestly my DS is nauseated at the thought of having to go to a civilian university for a year and then try again. One one tour, after about the 8th student with some sort of technicolor hairdo, he announced to my wife that there was no way in hell he was attending this school. I know you probably don't have a ton of spare time on your hands, but would love to get any perspective you have on your enlistment, etc.

I know that enlisted personnel typically have an easier time getting accepted and that most attend NAPS. Everyone’s opinion is subjective man. If your son could see himself enlisting and perform well enough for a couple years for his command to send up a package then just have him pick a job he wants. True aspirations don’t die, I imagine if he enlisted then applied a second time after some good command remarks he’d have no trouble. Would just have to retake test. Mustangs make the best officers anyway, but again opinions are always subjective.

Anyone know if USNA is pushing decisions date back? Was bored and browsing other SA forms, and I MIGHT BE WRONG, but WP pushed back to May 1st? Any clue if USNA is going to do the same?

May 1 has always been the decision date for USMA.

At this point, it is USNA or bust for me. I got accepted to some good colleges but I would rather enlist and reapply than pay to go to school for a year and then do NROTC. Even if I do not get into the Academy after enlisting I am going to go to college and get a degree and become a Mustang and become a Marine officer debt free. I am hopeful for the Academy but either way, I will be able to serve and do what I've always wanted.

Not to add to the portal checking, but one of my guys found out on a Saturday morning. Very early. And Mid-May off the waitlist. So don’t assume *only* 9-5 EST appointments!

Hey, maybe the time of your notices should be added to the list 😂🤔
Yep I also received my official appointment on a Saturday morning!

Thanks for your input. I think the fact that both times he went to CVW, both of his Mids were priors, one was NAPS and one direct entry from the fleet and that made him re-evaluate options. We are also in the same congressional district as Dam Neck and Oceana, so even if he does well and reapplies, it's a crap shoot with all of the competition in this district. SF

You don’t need a congressional nomination when you apply as an enlisted man. You only need the secnav nomination, it still helps to get your home appointment as well however.

@0317hog glad to see some other enlisted applicants. To answer your question, I have not received an appointment yet, however I finished/submitted my application on 31 JAN. I do know other enlisted applicants who have received NAPS offers as well as some that have been turned down. You mentioned reaching out to USNA through your CoC, have you tried directly contacting the USNA Fleet Coordinator? I believe the Master Chief at USNA is PCSing to another command so I'm not sure if he has left yet, but I would try contacting the Fleet coordinator email / number, hopefully he can help out.

Per OPNAVIST 1420.1B, there's 170 allowed slots under the SECNAV nomination, from what I've heard from these forums and my DH is that generally every year there are unfilled slots. For ex. there were only 59 prior-enlisted (only 3 directly from the fleet, rest were from Nuke School or priors that went to NAPs first) in the C/O 2027, according to the Class Portrait; the rest most likely goes to High School students sent to NAPs first. As to the the stats on priors with a SECNAV nom that don't receive an appointment: I'm unsure exactly but it's still possible to be turned down even if there is limited competition from the fleet. I know at least two priors that were turned down this year even with the SECNAV and CO's endorsement.

For context I applied out of High School for the C/O 2026 but failed to secure a nomination, so similar to your DS, I too was nauseated at the thought of the whole college process and simply didn't feel that NROTC was right for me so I decided to enlist to work towards re-applying for USNA. Enlisted-->USNA is not impossible by any means but defiantly has its own unique challenges. I believe most people aren't saying not to do it but simply warning you of the difficulties you may face. Will your Chain of Command support your application? What if you're underway, will you have time to work on your USNA application- especially when you're new and working on your quals? Etc. I would say "Choose your rate, choose your fate." From what I've seen CTs (intel jobs) and Nukes tend to be the majority of priors at USNA, but I could be wrong. I'd assume that's because those are more STEM type jobs and have challenging academic based "A" / "C" schools (training). Not saying there aren't other rates (jobs) that get accepted to USNA, but that CTs and Nukes tend to be the majority. If your DS decides to enlist, he should be aware that he may not be able to submit a USNA application right away, unless he goes Nuke as I believe they have many Sailors apply during their "A". I mention that because I spent over a year in "A"/"C" school and wasn't able to submit a USNA application till I reached my ultimate duty station. If USNA doesn't work out while you're enlisted, you can always submit a OCS or STA-21 package to earn a commission.

Ultimately, I believe enlisting has been instrumental to my development as a person and leader. Still waiting on word back from USNA this year, but I plan to apply again next year as enlisted if I don't receive an appointment this year. I'll avoid rambling on to much now, but feel free to PM if you have any questions or for my perspective.

Yes my command is in contact with them. I feel it better to have them reach out. Are you navy or usmc?

Also when turned down do you just see that in the portal?

Navy. Should show in the portal and I received a email. That was for C/O 2026 though, might have changed since then. I believe your CoC would be notified first and should let you know of an appointment / NAPs offer before the portal updates or admissions sends a email to you. There's a buffer time to allow your nomination source / CoC time to let you know themselves.
