USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Yes! USNA and USMA should offer club swimming for kids like your son who are solid and could swim on the collegiate level. I cannot figure out why they don't - there are several established club programs within a reasonable drive to Annapolis. Obvi on the NCAA side the Army/Navy rivalry is huge for swim and dive. 2022 was the first time in like 30 years that Army beat Navy (men), then this past season Order was Restored upon USNA's victory at an extremely close meet. I was chatting with a WP parent who said the WP Class of 2028 swim recruits is super-stellar - I had not been tracking your previous posts but was wondering if he was one of those super-stellar swimmers.
I imagine someone would need to donate additional aquatic facilities for club swim to be possible. The pools already house year round swimming classes for the mids/cadets, training sessions, swim team, dive team, water polo, etc. I don’t know where club swimmers would swim- the Severn maybe!

Haha, thanks ! My son is not that good -:) His best times were age group A, AA cut off, not good enough to make club's national group. He actually quit club swimming two years ago but he has been training himself ever since. He did well in high school competition as a self-training swimmer, qualified all the post season championships which usually dominated by club top swimmers.

We had two swimmers in our area recruited to USNA last year. Both were from my son's high school rival teams.

Awesome.

What events did he do? Times?

My kid sinks.

My DS was TD some time this week (he wasn't checking portal regularly). He was expecting it bc he didn't get a nomination. He heard from 2 senators that he wouldn't receive their nomination, but Rep never sent him anything. DS tried reaching out to MOC several times but never heard anything back. Others did get letters from MOC letting them know they wouldn't have his nomination. So not sure why DS never received one. That would have been professional and good closure.
Not sure if he's going to reapply to USNA, but he's likely joining the Corp of Cadets at VA Tech next year.
It has been great to hear about students jumping through the windows that open after the door closes. Best of luck to everyone in their endeavors!
Go Hokies! I will be a Hokie momma as well ;) 🥰

USMA men's team was ranked 39 in the country. USNA was ranked 36.

You have to be an elite swimmer to make either team. Same for both women's teams. Just being a club swimmer isn't going to cut it. You need to be at least Futures level, if not Junior National. DD1 was a California state championship qualifier and was only in the middle of the pack at Navy.

I’m a new BGO and the only one officially assigned to my district which is a mix of rural and urban but spread out geographically.

To sit on a MOC nomination panel I need my Area Coordinator approval.

If one of my candidates were on the interview list I would 100% recuse myself from that interview with full disclosure.

I was turned down by both the Military Academy and Air Force Academy, but I stayed hopeful for USNA. I received a call from my congressman earlier today informing me of an offer of appointment!! Go Navy! Beat Army!
Congrats!! I’m so happy for you! I’ve been a little MIA since DS turn down (not sulking - I promise! - just figuring out plans now that we finally know what he’s doing, ha!) but I was so happy to read this and feel the immediate and involuntary smile on my face for you! Grateful that nothing from time has soured my happiness for others - we are all in it together always since all (or at least most!) plan to join our US armed forces one way or another! Very very happy for you!! Congrats!!

So true ! Our club has three groups, national, advanced and developmental for all the age groups (over 8). The practice time and intensity are very different among these groups. In national group, some compete at future, junior national, most are sectional. In advanced group, most compete at LSC championships, a few compete sectional. DS only made LSC championships and left club two years ago but kept training himself focus on high school competition.

Our high school post season championship qualified time is much easy to make but swimmer has to be top 2 seed to make. Due to limit of events each swimmer can compete, some top 3 even top 4 may be selected.

Most club swimmers stop swimming after high school. But discipline and commitment developed from years of swimming practice (some early morning like 4:30) will stay with them for long time.

IMO, USNA has the same good "problem" that every top school has -- far more incredibly qualified candidates than places in the incoming class. I recall that a Yale admissions officer once said that they could fill their entire freshman class with h.s. valedictorians (in the days when there was only one per class) but they didn't want to do that.

Most selective colleges want "diversity" -- and I mean that in its broadest sense. SAs are a bit more narrow in their intepretation of this -- they don't look for musicians and artists in the same way "regular" colleges do. But, SAs like other colleges may take someone with a very unique experience and lower "stats." Even if they went just on merit, they would still be oversubscribed -- and can you really say: always take someone with a 1360 SAT over someone with a 1350; or take the candidate with a 3.81 GPA over someone with a 3.79. It's never that simple.

We'd all like to think that, if we work hard enough and want something badly enough, we will earn/achieve it. Sadly, that isn't always true. It's a tough "lesson" and goes against what kids are taught. But it's life. Life isn't always fair. That said, driven people almost always find success. It may not be the path they thought they'd take, but they find a new path -- and sometimes a better one.

I would add its not just diversity but also location and MOC nomination process that contributes to whether you are in or out.

It takes facilities, time, desire and a Cadet or Mid to take the time to develop the club. It takes a lot. USNA has a lot of great aquatic facilities, but with water polo, swimming, PE, remedial swimming, those facilities are taxed.

Monday was waitlist and some TWE’s, Tuesday was NAPS, yesterday was nothing. My prediction is today is TWE’s, and Friday we will see the remaining appointments go out.
