USNA Class of 2029 Waiting, Speculating, Hoping

The whole application was completed as of Nov 5th (CFA was the last thing and 11/14 was DODMERB). Nomination received... Lowk just praying to god that I get this appointment. Worked my whole life for this and it's finally paying off. Used to be a USAFA kid, but now a USNA kid. Let's get this!!!

Awful quiet out there. IIRC at this time last year appointment list was at 15-20 ish. Obviously, this is a self-reporting board so you can't objectively measure anything but I have to say way more crickets than this same time last year.

Can’t wait to see you finally getting that nom for USAFA, then see what happens. 😂

I remember last year, we saw a VP nom and the candidate turned it down. Of course their choice, but man it stings to see 1 of the 5 unicorns bolt the barn and not get used. You would think that admissions would be a little more certain that it was going to be used if they used one of those UNO cards.
My DS received a VP nom for USMA last year. He still wasn’t appointed. He was told by his FFR that they give out less than 10 VP noms (sometimes none) and they are ranked in order of wps. The first in line chooses if they want to accept and then if they decline it moves down the line. I don’t know if USNA does it the same way or not.

That's interesting. I thought the SA directly uses the VP nom to appoint someone without any nominations.

That's interesting. I don't know anything about the WP process, but it seems peculiar that any SA would give a discretionary nomination and not use it to appoint a candidate. Unfortunately, I am not surprised. The deeper I get down the SA admissions rabbit hole, the less it makes sense to me.

Yeah, we were pretty confident he was going to get appointed when he found that VP nom in his portal. He had a senate and congressional nom for WP as well, but didn’t win his slates. Pretty heartbreaking, but he ended up with a Falcon prep scholarship from USAFA. I’ll be thankful when he has his USAFA appointment in hand.

He had a senate and congressional nom, but didn’t win his slates. I will post the explanation his FFR sent us.

Congratulations! With the receipt of another Nomination, You are being considered one more time. You were previously evaluated three times, once against other IL-** Candidates, again against other Illinois Candidates, and finally in the QA pool. You didn't get picked, and you have been rated QNS, Qualified, Not Selected.

But You are one of those lucky few who the Director of Admissions, on behalf of the Vice President, has given them a VP Nomination to compete against other Nationwide Candidates.

The Director uses these Vacancies to fill out the class after the Congressional, QA and Service related Vacancies are done. VPNominations don't go out every year. Usually, Congressional, QA & Service related Vacancies alone fill the Class. Similar to the Congressional Noms; there are 10 Nominations sent out Nationwide for each Vacancy, and the number of Vacancies depends on the final shortfall through all other sources to reach the Class limit this year. You are competing against 9 other unknown Candidates for VPVacancy #3. The target to fill the Class is by April 30

You were given this VP Nominationdue to intangibles I cannot explain, But the 10 Nominees will be ranked only by their Whole Candidate Score (WCS), Highest first, then in descending order, The first will be Offered and given 72 hours to Accept or Decline. If declined, the Offer is made to #2 and so on.

You are already rated as QNS, and there is no change yet, but maybe in the next few days you may get a call...or not.

Good Luck!”

That's great to hear that he received and accepted the Falcon Scholarship. My DS was empty handed last year, but has a good attitude about it. We are in a very competitive area for USNA and every year we hear of candidates that get selected for NAPS and turn it down. Last year, the candidate that was selected was actually angry that they received it, even though it was pretty obvious why (for 1 thing, no math classes above Algebra II) and how much a gift it was.

The difference between receiving a nomination versus how many actual appointments are "credited" to that nom source:

Each nom source (MoC, VP) submits a list of their nomination candidates. As of this year, they can give 15 noms. (Not sure if VP are increased from 10 as well. The SA manages the VP nom awards).

However, at any one given time, each MoC and the VP can only have 5 people actually "credited" to them at the Academy. This means, in any given year, there is typically only one person that is actually appointed using that nom source. i.e. - Each MoC ends up with one person from their nomination slate of 15 that actually gets an appointment. Same with the VP. On average, only one person gets an appointment from the VP nom each year.

Now, with that said, there will be years where the SA can choose to take another off the slate if the MoC or VP currently only have 2 or 3 people attending against their name.

My DS received his MOC nomination a few weeks ago. It has yet to show up in his portal, however. When it does, will he have any way of knowing where his nomination ranks with his MOC or will that just remain a mystery?

You can try the hack that people figured out last cycle, which was to search the Java script in your portal.

There were lots of posts about it here last cycle. Just search "Java script" here and you can see how to do it.

I saw some forum posts If it’s for the USNA portal you can just inspect the element and it shows up in the console as “nomination type” or something similar.
