Hello All,

I have been lurking on the forum for nearly a year without posting anything. I’ve appreciated everyone's insight and am finally getting around the asking a question. That said, I am sure that this was asked in the past sometime but I can’t seem to find it.

I am currently a senior applying to the Naval Academy class of 2023. I am also applying to USMA and USAFA, as well as NROTC with a tier 2 major.

I was denied from two of the three nomination board interviews. I was honored to be invited to interview with my State Representative at the end on November. My USNA application is complete except for DoDMerb exams (Case still pending)

If I was only accepted to one of the interviews, this probably shows I am not as competitive as most of the state? However, if I can do well and win my slate I would have a good chance. Also, if my state shares nominations so that everyone gets a spot, would it be the same as if I was accepted to all three interviews but still only got on one slate?

Because of this, I’m trying to figure out whether to apply Early Decision to my NROTC #1 or not. I don’t think I will have a good chance getting in if I do not apply ED.

Thank you for thoughts, comments, etc. I’m probably overthinking this. I would be happy to post my stats/resume if anyone is interested or would like them to help formulate an idea on the situation.

Worry about what you can control. If you can't get an interview with either Senator, then you depend more upon your District's representative, and the VPOTUS nomination as a last-ditch. If you become triple-qualified with a nomination, your odds of receiving an offer of appointment increase the odds significantly (let's say about 45% in your favor). Those are really good odds. Of course, with no nomination, the odds are zero. After you are qualified, everything hinges on that nomination.

Read this thread about Early Decision to see why it's probably not a good idea to apply ED to any college if you really want to go to a Service Academy: https://www.serviceacademyforums.co...i-have-to-withdraw-my-usna-application.64093/

No, it's not the same. You got (hopefully) a nomination to one slate so you'll get one chance to win a slate and get an appointment that way (there are others such as beling selected off the NWL). Keep in mind, as you point out, that you're not competing against the entire state, just the applicants in your congressional district. Most applicants only have a nomination from their congressman. Let's say a state has 20 congressional districts. That's 200 nominees from congressman and only 20 from the Senators. Clearly far more people have only a nomination from their congressional district. You're in the same position as most of the nation.

Only if you would be willing to give up an appointment to an academy if you are selected via early decision from your #1 college. How far off is #2 being from #1? Can you make it #1 in your heart? Do you have a good chance of getting accepted there? Personally, I think the only way a college can be better than another is if the major you want to pursue is ranked better at the college. How does the major you want to pursue compare at the schools on your list? College is college, When all is said and done there is not much difference between them other than, perhaps, lifestyle. Just my 2 cents.

Oh yeah, what if you apply ED to #1, get accepted, but are not awarded an NROTC scholarship? Is it still your #1 school that you are now required to attend, or has financing changed that.

Just to add, if you want to apply ED is it a school that has a NROTC unit, and is it one you would like to attend? You CAN apply ED and still strive to get the Naval Academy acceptance- but you have to read the small print or speak with someone in admissions. For many colleges, ED is binding EXCEPT for a service academy acceptance. So it is possible. Students are more likely to be accepted under ED at competitive schools than regular decision. As aside, some schools also have non-binding early action applications, as well, which you may wish to avail yourself of. Best of luck
