Waiting for appointment and still moving forward with other colleges

I'm looking for advise regarding how other students are preparing for their plan B and C if the appointment does not come. My student has 3 other schools he is looking at but now deposits are required for housing and class choices are needed. He has to submit intents to attend, but really just hoping for USAFA. How far do we go and when do we say ok the appointment isn't coming to you need to decide on one of your backup schools?

May 1 is the college acceptance deadline for almost every school. Check with the other 3 schools admissions office on the deadlines. Most of the letters being sent from colleges about deposits and class choices are automatically done but don't feel rushed till you know the exact dates.

Make no commitments and send no money until May 1. That’s the nationally recognized “commitment date.” You will not lose anything or be at any disadvantage by waiting until that date. Schools may pressure you, but that’s only to their advantage and not yours.

As for the larger topic of how long to work Plan B — even if BFE is received — use the search function to find the many deep and heated discussions about this topic. It’s great reading.

We have our plan B in motion. Deposits paid. The housing contract signed. We will GLADLY forfeit those fees should an appointment come. Gladly. For sure will see if they can be refunded, but if not? we won't even care.

It's a personal decision....but the SA isn't going to align their offer to anyone with any regard to deposits paid, or lost. Their final date can be up to I day! I personally hope that we do lose a deposit. Because that means Plan A is moving forward.

I feel exactly the same we are in such a limbo waiting for either an ROTC scholarship or an appointment, will greatly affect what plans are. Without a scholarship community college will have to be the route taken.

Just wondering why you already paid a deposit before the 1 May deadline?

Perhaps because even if the appointment comes, this student plans to hold the Plan B spot until s/he gets safely through summer training which is what our son did. We, too, didn't care about losing the deposit. It was insurance that he'd have a place to go if he was turned back from USMA prior to the start of the Plebe academic year.

To get a good choice for housing. It’s assigned by your seniority on the acceptance. He actually put down the deposit last summer as soon as he could. Knowing that if he is able to cancel by a certain date he gets back all but 30$.

Our struggle is plan b is NROTC and that means the new requirement for naval basic is in the equation. Not simple at all. Likely would have to go civilian and reapply or side load

This is a new “issue” this year. It will be interesting to see how this piece (NSI) plays into all this!! As the earliest NSI session is June 9-29, most appointments will already be offered. So chances of being at session one NSI, and receiving an appointment whim there would be slim.

On the flip side, if one is trying to hold NROTC asa plan B, and already accepted their appointment, how do they manage NSI? As part of their plan B “in case I get injured”? Because I believe one looses their scholarship if they dont attend NSI. Is this you situation @Heatherg21?

Lastly, CAN one who holds an appointment, continue to process their NROTC plan B? Which will include signing up for NSI by May 15th. And hope they receive a 2nd or 3rd session (IOW, after iday)? It doesn’t seem like it would be a goood idea to be the guy that ‘sends an email requesting a late session, BC y’all are my back up and I’m hoping not to attend’ 🙄

I guess it remains to be seen how this all works BC having 3 sessions is new this year....and only one will conflict with the USNA process. Maybe this is an added gamble/decision that has to made if a session one is assigned 🤷‍♀️?

I got all this in the same file folder with “paying deposits”. Not putting much energy into it BC it’s not an issue. YET. But this could be an interesting little problem!

It used to be, without NSI, one had until the start of school in August to show up and use their scholarship. That timetable is now moved up to June 9.

We did send the non refundable housing deposit for plan B. My DS has received appointment to USMA, but we will send deposits to plan B just in case. You never know what might happen.

You have until May 15 for NROTC acceptance. But you can accept and then withdraw acceptance.

We're going to do the same. Better safe than sorry.

Yes, this is the spot we are in. He has Plan A, USNA appointment, as well as USMA. He intends to go SA, but the idea would be to reserve Plan B in case of any unforeseen issue at I Day. He has been in contact with NROTC command, they were congragulatory regarding his appointment, and recommended he request 3rd week of NSI. When doors close on IDay, it rescinds the NROTC. They were very understanding and said to continue on with his Plan A.
My mom gut, says pay the deposit to hold onto his merit scholarship in case there is an issue. We would then have to figure out student loans to cover difference for 1st year, and he could side load into NRTOC 3 year.
Makes my head spin.
If anyone has better idea or plan considering NSI is new and mandatory this year, I am all ears.

No, he would still have his full year NROTC scholarship. No need to figure paying for year one. No side loading. He has the 4 year until iday.

But, if there were a turn back at I Day, would he be too late for NSI? It seems crazy to ask NROTC to schedule him and purchase ticket to Great Lakes and then walk through the doors on IDay successfully.
If anything occurred during Plebe Summer the opportunity for NSI would be gone, and I think he would have to go civilian to awesome Plan B school (Norwich).
Their merit offer was great, and they also said it could possibly be increased. And, the deposit is tiny so there is that bit of goodness!

If candidate was medically disqualified for SA, then that would also take him/her out of the running for NROTC as well, wouldn't it?

I see what you are saying. Odds are very low that would happen. Has NROTC even planned for that contingency? I don’t know. Are you dropped from NROTC if you haven’t attended NSI? Or are you dropped after not showing up day one of school? Interesting. Again, the only session this affects is session #1, as your student would be at the academy on Iday.

Btw, I looked over DS’s stuff with a fine tooth comb and didn’t see any option to request a session. I wondered how they were assigned. How did you do that?
