hello! i am a freshman in highschool, and i’ve wanted to go to USAFA since i was 10 years old (and become a fighter pilot). recently, i had to get a spinal fusion for scoliosis and i felt crushed when i saw how difficult it was to obtain a waiver for my condition. i am about 5 months post-op, almost no pain, and i can twist and bend- (i can almost touch my toes again!) -but i cant do sit-ups or crunches. (i plan to workout my core and legs enough to do them again one day) i am in all honors / ap classes. i plan to do track at the end of the year, and continue it into my senior year, as well as swimming starting next year. i am in NJRTOC, and my gpa is about 3.9. i can do PT perfectly fine (except the sit-ups). i wanted to know my chances of obtaining a waiver for USAFA/AF (or any other service academy except USMA) i am also open to the idea of ROTC and OTC. i would prefer air force, then navy, coast guard, army, marines (in that order). i am super anxious and think about this everyday and im not sure who else i can ask. im not sure what career i would want if i cant get into the military. thank you!

What I always say -- If you don't try, the answer is always "no".

Waivers are given on a case by case basis. Don't DQ yourself. Let USAFA decide. You may or may not be pleasantly surprised. I wish I had a crystal ball. I will say that I know a cadet who had to have TWO waivers and he's graduated from USAFA now.

I don't know much about DoDMERB, but I will say this, make sure you keep track of all of the medical records, especially about the scoliosis. It's been a huge pain for me going through the DoDMERB right now because I haven't kept good track of my medical records. It'll make it much less stressful 3 years from now when you apply if you keep records well.
