Walk-ons

Hey guys. I've been playing soccer for a long time but never tried out for the school team because I ran cross-country during the fall. Does anyone know if USAFA men's soccer has walk ons? Do any of the school teams do walk ons?

Speaking for lacrosse, West Point's coach told me they do host tryouts in the spring and allow walk-ons, however these are D1 sports we're talking about. So if you feel talented and dedicated enough, best of luck to you!

Most academy sports teams do have walk-ons, but you should contact the coach early to let them know you are interested. And like rwjohnson416 said, these are D1 and are pretty high level so unless you are good enough to easily make/lead your high school team, it's going to be tough

Yes, the academy has walkons for all sports. The only one that is a time constraint is football. They practice immediately after basic training. Because the season starts just a few weeks later. So for football, you'd want to contact the coaches after receiving an appointment.

For all other sports, you can wait till basic training is over and then contact them. You'll be able to ask those in the know once you're done with but.

Actually this is not necessarily true. There are other sports (including tennis) that start in the fall almost right away. Others with later seasons still hold very early tryouts and have intense offseason training right after basic.

Unless things have changed, during basic training there is a day when everyone goes to the basketball stadium and the coaches for all of the sports hold up signs. The basics then get to go introduce themselves and get information about trying out for a sport (or sports) of interest

I recommend indicating interest before basic simply because you can often get information earlier so you are prepared (i.e bring your sports equipment to basic because tryouts are early, or learn that they are later and plan for your parents to deliver/ship). Also, it's one less thing to stress about when you are there.

This was still a thing during 2019's BCT and I am assuming it probably was during '20's as well.

I walked onto the track team...just like it was described above; during BCT.

My #3 is a fencer. USAFA has a fencing team. He does not feel that he is talented enough to contact the coach to be recruited but he would like to walk on the team. His brother was a walk on for USMA Track--and loved it, did well, etc. Anyone know anything about the fencing team? Also, any advice on 'complete the recruitment link/don't bother completing the recruitment link'?

I think @fencersmother would have some good information. Both of her sons were on the USAFA fencing team. Hopefully she will be along soon to answer any questions.

Thanks Stealth_81. I was rather hoping she would pop in and advise us. My thoughts are, "It costs him nothing to fill out a screen on a computer," but he seems to think that there is an expectation of 'very good' that comes with completing that form. My boys generally don't have confidence problems so I am nonplussed yet again by the inner workings of the teenage boy.

I would fill out the form-and keep in mind the fencing team has a ton of walk-ons each year. It's one of the only teams I've ever seen send out wing-wide emails after BCT advertising open tryouts. Most of the people I know on the team had no experience before USAFA.

Thanks Big Kahuna. I will continue to encourage him to fill out the form--just as the final deadline approaches...right. If #3 gets the nod, we will preposition his equipment where it can be delivered when he needs it.
